The article I chose is called “Outraged Cop Complains After Seeing This Painting At His Daughter’s School. ” The article is about a painting done by a child at school in Kentucky for a project on racial violence and how it relates to the Harper Lee novel “To Kill a Mockingbird. ” The picture shows on one side a Klu Klux Klan member pointing a gun at an African American with the year 1930 above it. The other half has the year 2015 above depicting a similar image with the Klu Klux Klan member replaced by a police officer. I personally believe that the schools motivation was to avoid a lawsuit , but I am glad that this student’s ability to express their thoughts and opinions was not limited by the complaining of an upset police officer. I find this shameful on the cops part how he attempted to prevent free speech because he did not agree with the subject matter in the painting. His job is to keep the peace and ensure that the laws of the state and federal governments are followed. I do agree that cop hatred has formed from negative stereotypes , but all stereotypes do have some level of truth to them. I believe that if you want to try to reduce the spread of these types of stereotypes, than this officer should have made an attempt to educate the children at the school about how damaging stereotypes can be instead of complaining about it on Facebook, and trying to have the image
