Unequal Treatment Since the birth of this great country, ironically called the melting pot, the unequal treatment of different races, especially African Americans, has been the source of immense conflict and controversy. From blatant racism, to simple treatment of blacks when it comes to healthcare, inequality has run rampant throughout the history of the United States. The non-fiction book, The Other Wes Moore, by Wes Moore, and the article, “Racial Injustice Still Rife in Healthcare,” both focus on the discrepancies and hardships that African Americans endure throughout their lives.…
I agree with Dr. Risa that if providers better examined their own performance data and its classifications within race, language, and sex, the provider could further their understanding of disparities within their practice and could work toward finding solutions to minimize the disparity gap. Providers would want to standardize all services across all racial groups to increase the overall level of care provided by their own facility and its reputation for such level of care.…
Many researchers have identified health disparities the goal is look at the the cyclical pattern that ultimately results in widened disparities in health care between minority groups and the majority and in continued discrimination of minority group( e.g., Buki, Borrayo, Feigal & Carrillo, 2004; Clegg, Li, Hankey, Chu, & Edwards,2002) . According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services states there is inequality in the quality of care given. For example if a white person suffered from a cardiovascular disease and a person of color suffered from the same thing would they received the same treatment? With health disparities healthcare becomes bias because society tends to aid the white person first and better versus the person of color. The first definition of health disparity was found in September 1999, Director Harold Varmus that worked for the white house was charged with creating a…
Health disparities means a great difference between different regions of the country. It is considered as a universal concern. Many people are suffering of health disparities. Sometime health disparities cause a serious cases that people could die from it. Minority group is usually a group of people that are similar to each other in there, language, believes, and religion.…
Race and ethnicity are also a determinant of infant mortality rates among African American women. Not only are there different risks among racial groups, but also there are racial inequalities. African American women are subject to more discrimination by health care workers and it ultimately changes their experience in healthcare. Changes in African American women experience in healthcare leads them to mistrust health care workers, and not feel comfortable with receiving care. Public health officials have been trying to understand how to change these inequalities and negative outcomes.…
The burden of death and illness associated with chronic diseases experienced by Africans Americans and other people of color are a result of disparities in the United States. The health disparities associated with these diseases are a compelling reason for addressing this problem. For example, According to CDC, diabetes is approximately 70 percent higher in African American and nearly doubles in Hispanic than whites (CDC, 2011). My goal is to improve the lives of racial/ethnic populations that are suffering from these devastating diseases by the end of 2017. By the end of FY 2016, A RFA will be in place for the development of a community projects to help reduce/eliminate health disparities.…
Victoria, You mention how our diverse cultural, social, and economical backgrounds shape our beliefs and perceptions about health and our tolerance of others. This is a good point to address as sometimes nurses’ beliefs and values influence their nursing practice. It can sometimes contribute to health disparities too. Eliminating health disparities is ranked by the National Institute of Health as the third top priority health issue. Health disparities have been highlighted in both the Health People 2000 and 2010.…
Kelly, I agree, that there is room for improvement when it comes to tackling health disparities and there are programs emerging that are trying to bridge the gap. According to the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (2015) in efforts to tackle health disparities, the National Institute of Health (NIH) selected two research teams to conduct studies on how to improve health outcomes, related to hypertension, for populations most at risk for health disparities. These studies are different than ones previously done because they fully engage patients and clinicians in the design and conduct of the studies. Each study has a patient-centered approach so that the patients are able to be involved in determining ways to improve their health…
Few also believe other providers practice inequalities in other medical fields, but not their own. (Mallinger& Lamberti, 2010) This unwillingness to accept one's own implicit bias can impact health care in the United States by how they provide services to racial-ethnic groups, building mistrust in racial-ethnic communities. Racial-ethnic groups might decide to not seek medical help until their health become unmanageable, which could cost the health care system more money since they would end up in the emergency room, most of the time.…
There is a problem in healthcare where racial and ethnic disparities exist. Despite the abundance of healthcare facilities, technology and pharmacology and other aspects to which the U.S. is envied by others, something that should be accessible to everyone, is not. The quality and improvement of health care have been a long- standing and persistent issue of national discussions in the United States for years. This problem has negatively impacted African American women because there is a disparity of access and quality of care that they are receiving. Poor outcomes in health care, based on race or ethnic background exist in every level of the American health care system.…
Racism and discrimination are being progressively implicated in racial and ethnic disparities within health care. Many believe that the inequalities associated with racism contribute to other factors including, safety and quality of care of ethnic minority groups. But racism and discrimination in healthcare do not solely occur from a provider to patient perspective- when health care providers initiate racism and discrimination practices to the patient. Racism and discrimination also often occurs from a patient to provider perspective- when the patient initiates racism or discrimination practices to the health care providers.…
Despite major advances in medicine and public health during the past few decades, disparities in health and health care persist. Health disparities are prevalent in the United States and are significant among underrepresented racial and ethnic groups (Mitchell, 2015). Compared to white Americans, these groups are uninsured or underinsured, have decreased access to care, and receive poor quality of care (Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality [AHRQ], 2013). Nurses can aid in reducing health care disparities through health systems interventions, cultural competency, and patient, provider relationship interventions.…
In this essay, I aim to guide you into the thinking that racialization in healthcare does exist and takes various forms through the following examples: structural violence and the racisms effect on health disparities, the manifestation of race as a social construct that limits out understanding of individual experiences, and how the human biology is static and too complex for race to define. As mentioned above, structural violence plays an important role in the perception of racism and racialization in the healthcare field. The term defines harms caused by social forces and its underlying causes include political and economic inequalities as well as racism, sexism, and homophobia (Koch, Lecture Notes). This is almost completely synonymous with the term health inequalities which refer to the disproportionate opportunities and resources in disadvantaged groups in society and the world at large (Erickson &Singer, pg.26).…
Every year, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has reported considerable progress of healthcare quality among the ethnic group. However, there are few opportunities and challenges that still hinder access of quality care. In 2010, approximately 33% of the USA of the population was people of the ethnic minority groups. These includes the African American (12.9%), Hispanics/Latinos (16.9%), Native Hawaiians and Other Pacific Islanders (NHOPIs) (0.2%) and the American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs) (1.0%). It has been projected that by 2050, the minority groups will account for 50% of the USA population (OMH, 2015).…
MEMORANDUM TO: All Hospital Staff FROM: Hospital Administration RE: Racial Discrimination in Providing Healthcare The hospital administration has noted with great concern that some of our staff are racially discriminating patients in providing healthcare at our institution, Massachusetts General Hospital. We are all aware that racial discrimination is partly to blame for lower health outcomes among the black population and other minorities in this country. Lavizzo-Mourey and Williams (2016) in their article report that being a person of color in United States is bad for your health. African Americans record high mortality rates, have lower life expectancy, and record higher incidences of adult obesity.…
