Does race play a part in hiring a model employee? The concept of race has played a role in job opportunities for minorities even though there have been quite a few changes throughout our nation’s social culture through the 1950s, which finally culminated in the first African American president being elected within the United States on November 4, 2008. Nevertheless, the election of an African-American president did little to ameliorate how minorities are discriminated across an individual’s name, education, or gender to acquire or foster progress within a job. As a result, these limitations have further how minorities like African American struggle in their communities, and passed on this struggling role to the following generations.

The company deals with the provision of energy services and products; that is Gas, electricity, and steam. It has six main branches that help in these services, Con Edison energy (provides energy services in wholesale), Con Edson solutions (provides energy services in retail), Con Edson development (operates energy infrastructure and renewable energy projects), Con Edson transmission (have invested in natural gas and electrical transmission projects), Orange and Rockland Utilities (offers regulated utility services to customers), and the Consolidated Edison Company (provides steam services). This organization has a total number of employees 14,976. It started in 1882 having only 59 customers per square mile in supplying electricity. The total worth of assets in the company is estimated to be 47 billions of dollars, and its operating income is currently 13 billions of dollars. It produces approximately 30 billion pounds of steam annually, and it has seven power plants. The company also has a network of pipelines estimated to be 7,200 miles long for gas transmission and 345kV interconnections. It has employed 14000 workers, of which 20% are women and minorities accounting for 48% of the promotions last year. Harwell has worked at Con Ed since 1991; she was the first female to hold the position of a line constructor, i.e. one with the task of fixing utility poles.
