Race as a social concept, is a group of people who share similar and distinct physical characteristics (Wikipedia). Americans like to believe that we are not a racist society, but unfortunately, it is an ongoing debate. Very often stereotypes, culture, and lack of knowledge and understanding are, in my opinion, what drives racism. Race has always been an ongoing driving factor for those that feel they are treated poorly or neglected based on their race. Jesse Jackson is a common household name in America, as he is regularly in the media fighting for the rights of the black community when there is a belief that racism has occurred.
Ramifications of Pop Culture Media
Discussion of race and these stereotypes placed on race continue to be a topic of discussion within the media. There are several sitcoms on television that have either a racial undertone or blatant racist script noted. Most often the racial stereotypes portrayed are what is shown, and most often in a comedic sense. For good reason, the race those stereotypes are aimed toward do not find this in jest, but very offensive. Children are very receptive; they listen to what the people they look up have endured and often base their feelings and thoughts on other’s experiences. Internalized racism, “a condition that can cause an individual to assume self-depreciating attitudes" (Holtzman & Sharoe, 2014, p. 245), is often a battle waged within several Americans of color. I have often heard people say, “I don’t see color, or we teach our children not to see color”, this I feel is not the appropriate way to educate our children. We need to embrace our differences, and truly not judge someone on appearances
