Racial Discrimination: First Impressions

Improved Essays
First impressions are said to be the most important. A first impression can help one decide whether or not they want to affiliate themselves with a person, build a relationship, treat them with kindness, respect, and much more. When a person first lays their eyes on another there are a few things they pay attention to. They may notice the eyes, body language, the entire face, and other features one may have. Unfortunately for some, they only see skin color and the stereotypes that come along with those. There have people people convicted of crimes, killed, and discriminated all due to racial discrimination. Living in a southern state, I have witnessed much more racial discrimination in my community compared to the northern states I have lived …show more content…
Skin color does not guarantee one's actions; good or bad nor does it represent a human. Racial discrimination is something I stand against proudly. We are all equal believe it or not. Human is human no matter what the social status, religion, sexual orientation, mentality, or race. To believe that there was a time where you were not allowed to enter a place, attend certain parties or even walk on some streets due to the pigment of your skin is both unbelievable and disappointing. Where, when, and why was this ever okay? It takes everyone to make the difference. In order to put a stop to racial discrimination, one needs to speak up. Unfortunately, most people are afraid to argue with another for a handful of reasons once it comes to right and wrong. For some, they may want to avoid conflict or even embarrassment. When in all reality, not standing for such an ugly act can cause conflict and embarrassment all by itself. Unless there is a possibility of being harmed, speak up. There should be no tolerance once it comes to racial discrimination. It tears people apart, makes them feel hopeless, worthless and much more. I have experienced this first handedly. The day I was racially discriminated is a day I will never …show more content…
For example there have been cases such as fraternities singing chants about lynching African Americans and vulgar language used towards African American, Indian, and Asian women. There have also been extreme action taken that one can never take back, killing. Dylan Roof is widely known for his anti-black killings that took place June 17th, 2015 at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Although he is in fact facing time and is even eligible for the death penalty, society began to make excuses for his actions. Claiming he was mentally ill, when in fact he admitted he was trying to shadow other famous anti-black murders. If a person of color were commit such crimes, would they be given excuses such as “they are mentally ill”? I do not think so. Today’s society is so blinded by its stereotypes. No matter the color, right is right and wrong is wrong. For such problems to still be taking place in 2015 scares me. Is our human race moving forward or are we setting ourselves back? History can not repeat itself. We must grow and move forward to become bigger, better, and

Racism has turned our society into one full of hate and discrimination based of skin color and cultural beliefs. Unfortunately, discrimination has done more than just separate individuals socially it has also divided them into high and low economic classes. We have created a society in which people who are born into lower classes are unable to climb the social ladder and reach an elite economic status. Our society has made it almost impossible for those who are not in power to ever reach such a position. We have created a society in which those who are suffering will continue to suffer and be looked at as a having no value or ability to contribute to the success of the economy and structure of society.…

The next school day, Mrs. Elliott told the students it was actually the blue-eyed students who were the smartest not the brown-eyed students. They were given more recess time which was very upsetting to the brown-eyed students. Mrs. Elliot said the blue-eyed students “were much less nasty than the brown-eyed kids had been, perhaps because the blue-eyed kids had felt the sting of being ostracized and didn’t want to inflict it on their former tormentors” (Bloom, 2005). After the exercise, Mrs. Elliott reminded the students of the Martin Luther King Jr. assassination which was the purpose of the exercise and she wanted them to document their experience through writing. Some students said they wanted to hit other students and other students did not want to come to school anymore because they felt discriminated against (Bloom, 2005).…

The sentence, “And you are not the guy and still you fit the description because there is only one guy who is always the guy fitting the description” is repeated. I think it’s repeated because the author want to remind us that there is always someone mistaken for the criminal. This is important because in the black community, people are always being frisk for unjustified reasons or rather they fit the description. Everytime I read that sentence, I start to think deeper and and ask myself why is there always one other person that fits the criminal description? I learned in my American Government class that black people are the highest victims of stop and frisk.…

Racism is the belief that belonging to a particular race means a person has inherent characteristics that one deemed either superior or inferior. Based on racist belief, prejudice and discrimination are still alive today, though important figures as Martin L. King Jr. lead the movements to end this and enact anti-segregation laws. These ideas are being transmitted to younger generations despite the progress that has been made. The minorities and people who are victimized by this injustice find it often difficult to focus on the task at hand and the goals they set out for. When victimized, people often respond in two ways: acting out in a violent manner, or fighting against others.…

White flight occurs when a neighborhood, a formerly white neighborhood begins to assimilate, even if individual whites don 't have particular or psychological hostility or racial animosity, they still have an economic motivation to move somewhere else. Students are treated through racial, social, and/or educational acts based on their backgrounds. Children get treated based on what their home-life is like and that is not a fair way to judge a kid because they cannot help where they live or how they were raised. A study being done about “The Depressing Effects of Racial Discrimination” by Cornell News Service, really shows how judging people on their race truly hurts them and has a long lasting effect on that human. Discriminating among others of different races puts them in “depression” and makes them get into a “negative mood”. Humans already have to go through enough hardships in life, they do not need the extra burden of dealing with racist people telling them they do not belong here.…
