While today there are no longer states that own slaves, the oppression once felt by ancestors of many families has been passed down. Today, the battles being fought against racial discrimination are not the exact same, but today’s battles are quite similar. Right now, in America, movements opposing racial discrimination are especially prominent now following the 2016 presidential election. After electing to office a President who is constantly accused of discriminating about several races, especially Hispanics, and Muslims. Today, the way we see racial discrimination being fought is through movements such as “Black Lives Matter,” “Hispanic Lives Matter,” and “Muslim Lives Matter.” A recent report shows us what percentage of several people groups are affected racial discrimination. “It disproportionately affects Black, Hispanic, and Asian individuals in the United States, with 90% of Black and 79% of other non-White adults reporting perceived racial/ethnic discrimination, compared with 22% of White adults.” – Coker, …show more content…
During this portion of the research, students were asked questions specifically tailored to assisting researches in finding positive correlation between racial discrimination and mental health problems. Results of the survey did show positive correlations “We found positive associations between perceived racial/ethnic discrimination and symptoms of depression, ADHD, ODD, and conduct disorder. The strongest and most consistent association across non-White racial/ethnic groups, however, was between symptoms of depression and perceived racial/ethnic discrimination, with an OR of 2.6 to 3.9 for Black, Hispanic, and other children.
