Gender, race, and class all play a role in defining relationships, identities and experiences that are ultimately shaped by conditions of oppression. With privilege comes oppression, as the underprivileged lack power and are essentially denied the opportunities to pursue life according to their own terms.
Exploitation, the 1st face of oppression, refers to the act of using people’s labor to produce revenue without equitable compensation for their hard work. Powerless individuals in turn feel as if their opinions hold no value and while the powerful hold the ability to make decisions. This face of oppression is the strongest as it creates this culture of silence that represses voices. A good example would be slaves as some felt so indoctrinated by their masters they didn’t even realize they were being treated unjustly. Cultural imperialism refers to the dominance of one group’s cultural expression over other groups’ experiences. Sexuality exhibits an example as any group other than heterosexual is viewed as inferior. This ranking of power is considered “normal” universally and implies the best for all humanity. Lastly, violence seeks to remind the public of the consequences of resisting when in oppressed conditions and is the most obvious form of oppression. A common example would be gay men harassed and beaten outside of bars and clubs in order to damage and humiliate these individuals. Purity and virginity exhibit two characteristics expected of women in the eyes of men, and without them, are devalued and undesirable. However, the same expectations are not placed upon men which creates an immense double standard. If women chose to sleep with multiple men she would in turn be treated with less respect and deemed a “whore,” whereas men would actually gain respect for having slept with multiple women and have free reign. The ideal woman is always thought to be virtuous, pure, and whole. This mindset in turn contributes to the objectification of women as a prize rather than a human being.
