According to Conley, he describes race as a group of people who share a set of characteristics, typically, but not always, physical ones and are said to share a common bloodline. The discrimination against someone’s race is racism. Racism is said to be the belief that members of separate races possess different and unequal traits. One of the most famous racism stories happening right now is the shooting of Michael Brown. The shooting occurred on August 9, 2014 in Ferguson, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. Brown was an 18 year-old black male who was shot and killed by a 28 year-old man named Darren Wilson, a white male police officer in Ferguson. (2015) After the grand jury announcement, Ferguson residents set local businesses on fire, but these protests did not stop there. 170 additional cities across the United States became involved in these riots, including Seattle, St, Louis, and New York City. (2015) After many more steps were taken to resolve the protests, on November 29th, Darren Wilson resigned from the Ferguson police department. His lawyer states, “Wilson will never be a police officer again, as he does not want to put other officers at risk due to is presence.” (2015) These outrages happened because Ferguson residents felt as thought Wilson only shot Brown because he was a black male; they believe that Wilson would not have fired if Brown had been a white male. They found Wilson’s acts as racist acts because he was a white officer who not only shot, but also killed a black person.
