Media has made it clear that only white male characters ended up being the hero in the end and everyone else was not important. Non-white characters may have been put in the movie to show to the audience that they do not want to be raciest, but they always ended up dying in the movie anyways. Being white was your ticket of reaching goals easier than minorities. Yet, minorities outnumber whites in some states, we still see more whites holding positions of power. McIntosh and Martin both have similar articles on white privilege; McIntosh believes white privilege is something that is taught within the white community by parents, teachers, and their surroundings. Martin believes white privilege is something that occurs in five stages though out a white persons life that ultimately challenges a person use their white privilege as (possessive or active) positive or negating. Both articles touch base and have listed lists on certain transactions they are both able to do because they have been granted white privilege, as I read those list I began to think of how I can relate to their lists in the opposite way. A) McIntosh defines white privilege as an idea that is not taught to the white community, she explains in her article…

Media has capitalized on the white power structure capitalized on white people being superior in certain characteristics, traits, and attributes of other racial backgrounds. Moreover, the effect comes into play is that whiteness becomes hidden as an issue within society. So “by viewing whiteness as a rhetorical construction we avoid searching for any essential nature to witness”(Nakayama & Krizek, 1995). So whiteness is a strategic rhetoric that positions those who are included in a particular way. Subsequncly, this is due to how communication is impoverished within cultures.…

White Privilege One may believe white privilege is the inherited advantage white people have based on their race in a society that contains racial inequalities and injustices. Privilege is a special right, advantage, or freedom granted or available only to a particular person or group of people. In America, there are certain individuals that are more advantaged than others are. I believe that everyone has at least one advantage over someone else that is less fortunate in one particular area of life than they are. There are several different examples and cases of privilege that contains different components of whatever it involves.…

Saying that white privilege doesn't exist is bullshit. I learned that real quick growing up in Arizona with my dad. My dad is brown and fits the 'Mexican' stereotype profile, meanwhile I took more of the white features from my mom's side. Most white people don't give me shit like they do with my dad and that has nothing to do with money and all to do with race. People are constantly questioning his legal status or making racist remarks towards him.…

America prides itself on the idea that we give fair, equal opportunities to all citizens in our country. No matter who you are or where you came from if one works hard enough social mobility is achievable. Khan’s Privilege, and the documentary White Like Me, helps explain how this idea of meritocracy in America is extremely flawed. Colorblind racism is reinforced by affirmative action, and scholarships, as a way to help promote an equal playing field, which only enhances the idea of meritocracy. While examples of black success like the 2008 election are being used as proof that America is no longer racist and that there is no reason, except for ones own, for no social mobility.…

Nothing, yet everything; The Importance of Race and Identity in America Race and identity are two words that mean absolutely nothing, yet they mean everything in the society we live in today, and the society we have lived in the past. Throughout time, as a result of the underlying perceptions that people carry of people of a different race, we have seen these perceptions affect social structure, legal rights and privileges, and we have seen it serve as a platform for discrimination that has been plaguing this country for years. Everywhere you go, whether you like it or not, certain preconceived notions about the way people are because of the color of their skin invade your mind. Passing a black person on the street might make you walk a little…

Of the several discourse communities that I belong to, the most evident and probably the one that I identify with the most is the black community. Contrary to popular belief in this country, the black community does not exclusively include African Americans, but those who come from African descent such as people from Africa, the United States, Caribbean, and in some cases Europe and Central/South America. From our several shades of brown to our unique culture, this large, widespread group of individuals is my community; we represent the global black discourse community. The black community has experienced a significant amount of tension both within and outside the community.…

Since the use of genetic data to define the validity of race erupted in the 1970’s, some scientists have addressed the notion that genetic variation by means of racial differences represents a form of racialization and therefore racism, in healthcare settings and within health spectrums in general. By using race as an indicator of genetic disparities we are acknowledging race as a biologically based enigma rather than a social construct. We allow discrimination to color a picture of embodied inequality among healthcare measures. Just as the anthropological definition of culture defines cultures as static entities defined by geographic boundaries, we cannot perceive race as a biological marker of genetic variation because it to is complex and static. Human biology, no matter what geographic location one hails from, is…
