Racial issues in the United States faces center stage once again in national news, this time in Charlotte, North Carolina. Riots and violent conflict between blacks and whites have erupted within the city since Tuesday, when Keith Lamon Scott, an African American 43-year old man with seven children was killed Tuesday in his neighborhood after an incident between him and police. The full details of the shooting have been modified by both police officials and eyewitnesses and neighbors, and has raised controversy on what actually happened in the final moments of Scott’s life. Protests against the event have escalated into riots, where stores and buildings like the Spectrum Center, home of the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets have been victims of looting and vandalism.…
In the article, “From an early age, walking home from elementary school with his older brother, Agostini took note of the differential treatment police gave to black people in his community” (Melinda D. Anderson). Even young age of kids has to feel the difference between the treatment of among white and black. It is not all the problems but also the problem of health care, incarceration rate, the rate of uninsured, and also education system. On the other article, “Among the 200 biggest school districts in the U.S., Seattle has the fifth-biggest gap in achievement between black and white students” (Balk Gene). Treatment was different according to the color of a skin.…
According to the article of 'All Lives Matter' vs. Black Lives Matter by Gordon Marino, he states that ‘Black Lives Matter started after the case of Trayvon Martin in 2013 and it creates a debate after that incident. He shows people’s perceptions about this issue. Gordon asserts Ben Carson’s perspective: "The Black Lives Matter movement is focused on the wrong targets, to the detriment of blacks who would like to see real change. " On the other hand, Rand Paul says: “I think they should change their name maybe--if they were All Lives Matter, or Innocent Lives Matter."…
On February 26th, 2012, 17 year old Trayvon Martin was shot on the streets of Sanford, Florida, because he was perceived as threatening by local vigilante, George Zimmerman. Following Martin’s death, the nation was both shocked and outraged. How could something of racist nature occur here, in America? Yet this wasn’t the first incident, it was the first time the populace found out. In the United States, African Americans are two and a half times more likely to be killed by police than their white counterparts, though they may not even be committing a crime.…
Tienna Fenton Armed and Dangerous? An Examination of Fatal Shootings of Unarmed Black People by Police 1. Major Themes This article focuses on the ever present discrimination of African Americans in the United States and the recent increasing number of blacks killed by police officers. The first theme viewed is the perception of blacks in the media as well as the perceptions blacks have of law enforcement.…
The book Ghettoside by Jill Leovy is an analysis of crime statistics. The book shows that although African-American males are just 6% of the total population, they constitute 40% of those murdered in the United States (Leovy, 2015). Leovy narrows her analysis of murder cases and police investigations in South Los Angeles as an example of what happens in other urban areas that are dominantly occupied by poor African Americans. She also focuses on specific cases of murder, how the law enforcement reacted and the views of the relatives and friends of the victims. In 2013, Blacks accounted for 32% of all homicides in Los Angeles despite being 8% of the total population (Leovy, 2015).…
Before I set out on my journey of acquiring more information about systemic racism prevalent in our nation today, I often fell into the trap of not believing racism existed today since the actions I associated with racism, like the backlash to the Civil Rights Movement in the ‘60s, did not occur anymore, to my limited knowledge. It wasn’t until the shootings of Trayvon Martin and later, Michael Brown that I began to seriously consider the topic of race in America. I can admit that I had a lot of push back in my mind to the idea of police brutality and profiling of people of color, in particular, African-American men. I used to strictly abide by societal rules, so if someone broke the law or was up to nefarious activities, then they deserved to be punished. But the concept of killing a person who was unarmed really forced me to reevaluate my beliefs over race and racism.…
African Americans being subject to excessive violence and unlawful killings by the institution that is meant to protect them continues with no solution or abatement likely. Sophia Kennedy discusses the repeating pattern of violence and looks at the steps necessary to prevent it. An unarmed man shot. Riots.…
Almost every day, a story will be published regarding a cop shooting a person of color due to preconceived notions and stereotypes that they are bad people. The United States was founded on the belief that all people will be “protected by the equal laws of a common government,” (Document 1). These words have not been held true since being written in 1796. In the time between then and now, there have been slaves, the civil rights movement, and the Black Lives Matter organization. In the two hundred and twenty-two years since the nation founded itself on the basis of equality, there have been many movements and even a war revolving around the human rights of people of…
The Birth of Division Currently, there are many issues about race and civil rights in America. Much of the talk generated focuses specifically on Ferguson, Missouri because of the Michael Brown incident. Although race seems skin deep, it actually plays a factor worldwide.…
Most murder victims in America are usually black people slaughtered by their own, magazine The Economist says, “Blacks represent 13% of America’s population, yet in 2015 they represented 52% of the slain.” Until now there is not an answer to why young black americans tend to be the ones being affected by this the most, whilst men from other ethnicities do not deal with such problems. The answer lies with a combination of poverty, family imbalance, epidemic of drug use in the wretched inner-urban center districts into which many total darkness s were corral by racialist housing policy, and bad, or non-existent, policing. The last of these, which may be the most important, extends far beyond occasional instances of police brutality.…
An Ever Changing Country Although it has been decades since slavery ended, racism is still a profound controversy in the United States today. Charles Blow describes some of these levels of racism and its effects on people in the United States in his article “White America’s ‘Broken Heart’”. The article, as can be deciphered by the title, is about how white Americans today are handling the changing situations of equality in the United States. Blow published this article February 4, 2016, on The New York Times’ Opinion Pages on their website. Many Americans assume that racism is almost completely gone in today’s society, but Blow believes that it still lingers and is affecting the health of Caucasians in America.…
The conversation about race and the discrimination surrounding it has been around for centuries in the United States. Many citizens today however seem to think racial prejudices are a thing of the past and not significant enough for legitimate discussion. This thought can be countered by watching the news for five minutes a day – race dominates the US’s media stream, especially after tragedies such as the deaths of Michael Brown, Trayvon Brown, and Eric Garner. The death of Michael Brown, specifically, caused tremendous upheaval not only on the television screen, but also in the streets. Brown was fatally shot by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri after stealing a pack of cigars from a local convenient store.…
Argumentative Research Paper: All Lives Matter vs. Black Lives Matter Paul Farmer once said that “The idea that some lives matter less is the root of all is wrong with the world.” This simply justifies what has been continuing in the United States which is Racial Discrimination. Knowing that racial discrimination is still persistent in America, African Americans have been one group that is constantly targeted. "Racism has always been America 's Achilles heel in intentional relations.” (HERNDON, LISA.)…
In a year filled with one shocking and dominating media story after the other; from Donald Trump's’ election and the Russia Scandal to #MeToo, one narrative has become a surprising fixture in American popular culture and media: Colin Kaepernick's protest of police brutality during the National Anthem. Although it has been almost 18 months since the former college standout quarterback and GQ magazines 2017 Citizen of the Year, took his last snap in the National Football League, his iconic protest has taken on a life of its own. The kneeling has evolved from symbolic action to a prominent aspect of African Americans’ modern struggle for equality by starting a national dialogue that is still ongoing. This prominence has also made Kaepernick a…
