The application process alone can be stressful: the essays, the test scores, the letters of recommendation and the deadlines. The admission process takes into account your extracurricular activities such as volunteer work, babysitting, sports, etc. Also it's based off of your academic history throughout the young adult’s high school career. That sigh of relief after you hit send on the Common App. But here's the real question: Can your racial background influence your chances of getting into college? Can your ethnicity jeopardise your chances or getting into the school of your dreams? Many applicants have reported that their race can and usually is accounted for when they apply to a college or university. Some caucasian high school seniors have …show more content…
Many who have been affected by this have stepped forward and started sharing their experiences. Jeffrey M. Jones, a writer from the Gallup.com wrote a article called “In U.S. Most Reject Considering Race in College Admissions”. This article spoke about how most colleges and universities are starting to crack down on racial bias in the application process. Throughout this article he also spoke about how two thirds of Americans are now solely being accepted into college based off of their economic and racial status. More Caucasians are being accepted on merit along with scholarships, but apparently 28% of applicants believe that their racial background is being taken accounted for as well their economic standing currently (Jones) . Last year 75% of Caucasians were given higher paying scholarships than 59% of minorities( Jones) that were denied or even given a smaller scholarship, About 10% of African Americans were accepted on merit, and were given half of what other races received (Jones;

    Hurtado’s “Linking Diversity with the Educational and Civic Missions of Higher Education” discusses this. He explains a case where students in the majority were discriminated against by a law school and the final result of the case told the school that they would have to consider “the ‘whole student’ review process… and rejected the point system that assigned a value to race in undergraduate admissions,” (188). There needs to be a balance amongst the minority and majority issues. As Hacker and Dreifus say, colleges need to become more “conscientious, caring, and attentive to every corner of their classrooms,”…

    Student’s Name Professor’s Name Subject Date Top Ten Percent Law Introduction So many challenges have faced college admission as universities in Virginia State have adopted the top ten percent rule that only guarantees students who graduated in the top ten percentile from their high schools to get an automatic admission to public universities (Charleston 2). This law serves as a transition from a race- based policy that had been in use known as the affirmative action.…

    but they are passed up in admissions because there are not enough spaces for them and obviously because of the color of their skin. This is clear reverse discrimination. And it is insulting and undermining the capabilities of the minorities. It is wrong to imply that you cannot apply the same standards of admissions to the African Americans, Hispanics as you do with White Americans because the minorities would not be able to meet these standards. In a study made by a top law school, fifty percent of African American law students were in the bottom ten percent of their high school class and most of them were admitted because of the affirmative action policy.…

    Academics Besides allowing whites to presume the academic abilities of Black students, negative racist assumptions also affect the academic performance of these students (Hubain 2016; Harper 2009; Harper 2015; Solórzano et al. 200l). According to Solórzano et al., several students reported the way “racial microaggressions had affected their academic performance in overt ways such as pushing them to drop a class, changing their major and even leaving the university to attend school elsewhere” (Solórzano et al. 2000: 69). Specifically, one African American female student reported changing her major to English after being upset and tired of having to fight through the racism she experienced in her science courses (Solórzano et al. 2000).…

    After thoroughly reading the Washington Post article regarding racial isolation on campus I realized the lack of supporters for this important cause. Students nationwide have reported a drastic number of discriminatory situations surrounding the acceptance rates for certain minorities. The “affirmative action” bake sale provided by several ethnic students was a humorous way to shed light to a growing problem. The racial discrimination experience wrongfully denies aspiring students based on their race or financial background. As I applied to college recently, I noticed the extremely specified and limited options in relation to racial backgrounds.…

    Current campus diversity programs do not take financial situation into consideration, thus ignoring economic diversity on campus. Although race has been historically disadvantaging for Americans, the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation found that economic class has risen to the primary source of discrimination in today’s society (Camera). Because of this, Richard Kahlenberg—a senior fellow at the Century Foundation—believes it is wrong for colleges to give priority to students based on race, but offer no admission bonuses to low income students. A Georgetown study confirms Kahlenberg’s belief, finding that considering economic disadvantage could boost low income representation in higher education by 28%. In order to offer the best opportunities for students in the 21st century while maintaining complete diversity on campus, colleges and universities should shift from racial affirmative action to a system based on socioeconomic…

    Discrimination in America In the American culture, there are many African American figures that have been negatively used in product labeling. Those figures include Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben. These two icons are not the only figures being racially discriminated through product labeling. Miss Chiquita, a Latin American figure, racially discriminates the Latina group. Native Americans are also racially discriminated through product labeling by schools and sports teams through the use of mascots.…

    For years racism has lingered in this country and poisoned impressionable minds. By using race to determine college acceptance, we are allowing race to become a factor again, and it recognized by the United States Supreme Court, the highest court in this country. By allowing race to be a factor for college admissions, Brown v. Board of Education mine as well be rescinded and thrown out the window along with the progress we have made as a nation for racial equality. I am not saying racism does not exist; one can turn on any news channel and see evidence in it any night of the year. However from the abolition of slavery, to the abolition of the Jim Crow laws, to the level of diversity in our schools today, racism is on the decline.…

    The ethnic and racial stratifications in the United States educational system have been reinforced throughout history by means of public policy on racial biases. The biases in which policies are formulated and applied, has created and expanded the achievement gap between White-Americans and minorities. These policies are not always directly targeting low-income schools, however it can be seen within the segregation of residential areas that has a direct impact on local schools. The racial and ethnic stratification of education in low-income schools is not simply the work of one factor, but a combination of sociological elements that have perpetuated these circumstances. Through intergroup relations, sociological components, and historical events constrain the…

    If we look at the idea of racism, we acknowledge the views that white people had against people of color as inferior to them. Racial discrimination does exist in sports as the discrimination has negatively impacted the ethics of sports and the code of conduct of athletes. It was inevitable that racial discrimination has mainly entered itself into sports by the white audience. My essay is going to dwell specifically in a theory called the Black Athletic Superiority theory and how it cause the discrimination in Basketball, Tennis and Soccer. The contradiction of this “superiority” theory, in light of racism, has been an issue which have perplexed many of sports analysts the 21st century and have likely caused the effects of racial discrimination in respective sports.…
