In today’s society numerous of lives have been lost due to police killings. Is that because of race? Particularly young black men have not been making it back home to their families. This is not because of individual police officers are racist or they think that black lives do not matter. This is because police officers and other government officials perform the way they are trained to perform. A statement that police often use when they are in training is “Better to be judged by twelve than carried by six (The)” This means officers would rather be judged by the jury or other people than to be killed just because they were hesitant when they were trained to react. Officer safety is heavily emphasized that it almost takes on a religious significance. Rookie officers are taught a rule that is widely known as the first rule of law enforcement is an officers goal everyday is to go home at the end of their shift. They learned that every individual they encounter could be a potential threat; police always have to be on their guard. (The). Officers are not just told about the risks they face every day by putting on their badge and going on duty, they are shown the brutal things they face every day. Officers are taught that the primary culprit isn’t the bad guy on the video they just seen of a police being beaten and disarmed, it is the officer’s lack of vigilance.
