Audre Lorde once said, “It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.” When I hear this quote, I think about diversity and how our society is filled with a wide range of divergence. The differences in society is so large, that we feel divided or like an outsider to those who may have dissimilar views, perceptions, and opinions. Truth is, Lorde is right. If we as a society are able to accept those difference, and accept the wide range of diversity we have, despite how hard it may be, then we have no reason to feel or be divided. We can encourage each other, and celebrate the variance. Throughout this essay I will be discussing the significance of racial awareness, and diversity.

Though everyone has different perceptions on this matter, the way I see diversity is fairly simple and the way I see racism is a little more complex. I have grown with diversity all around me, and I have always been open minded and accepting to the diverse society. I am understanding of others thoughts, gender, sexual orientations, etc. However, when I think of racism, it 's a little more multiplex, because everyone goes through different things in life, and not everyone experiences the same things. It also is hard to try empathizing with the different racial discrimination people experience. I am a person who has never been faced with discrimination, therefore I do not know what it may feel like. But I understand that it is a serious impact and can change a person 's

In spite of decades of diversity policy and practice, America is in many ways more divided than ever when it comes to issues of identity. Critics from the political left argue that we simply need more diversity to overcome the division, while critics from the political right argue that diversity has devolved into an unworkable set of unfair entitlements that are themselves the cause of the division. Understanding the Misunderstanding, the first part of the four-part series Ourselves Among Others: The Extravagant Failure of Diversity in America and An Epic Plan to Make It Work, explains the sources and causes of the social divide in America, and also shows how neither the political left nor the political right have understood the problem or…

“It is not our differences that divide us, it is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences,” said Audre Lorde, a Caribbean-American writer, and civil rights activist. In this quote she is saying that if we just agreed that we are different, and we won’t alway get along, then the world would be a more peaceful place. Even in today’s society people are pulled apart from others because of their differences. Even so the society today is better than it was during times like America in the 1930’s, on the Indian reservations, and in Europe between Jews and Christians.…

AH, WHAT A MESS. DIVERSITY, that is. Before I launch into a preview of all the intertwined issues that make diversity such a misdirected drama, I’ll start with a simple question: Is diversity a good idea done wrong, or a bad idea done just right? As I will make clear throughout this book, there is nothing inherently wrong with the idea of diversity, and in fact as an idea it evokes tremendous promise. The problem therefore must lie in the execution and in the application, and that indeed is pretty much the central message of this whole book.…

In order to examine diversity in today’s workplace, we must first look at the history of diversity and its place within the workplace. Over the past couple of decades, diversity in the workplace has been an increasing norm, which is visible in many companies. However, today’s definition of diversity has a completely different meaning than what diversity might have meant twenty or so years ago. Throughout the early days of business, when companies began creating initiatives for diversity, the focus was on African Americans and other minorities.…

To my dismay I soon apprehended that I was not as open-minded as I had presumed that I was. Although, I had attended a multi-cultural school during my adolescent years that exposed me to different ethnicities. I had not developed a culturally competent way of thinking until I entered into Wayne State University’s School of Social Work program this fall. During my tenure at this diverse school I cultivated personal relationships with a multitude of people from different races, who possessed diverse beliefs and religions.…

Diversity is an important tenet in today’s globalized world; one faces diversity almost every day so it is important for people to have a wide understanding of what diversity is and how diversity can be beneficial to both society and individuals. An international student teaching internship would greatly enhance my knowledge of diversity allowing me to have more success as a future educator and a citizen. Going on an international internship would expose me to the very definition of diversity; I will be placed in country I have never been to and I will experience customs that I’ve never experienced before. Putting me in England will force me to confront new situations and different outlooks on the world that will open my mind to many new ideas and concepts that I may never get to experience without the internship. These new experiences with diversity will allow me to open my mind more to the human experience in general, while also making it easier for me to understand the views of people all around the world, specifically those in Europe.…
