The reason I want to be a social worker is because I want to help preserve a persons “soul”. I believe in the existential and I think all humans have wonderful gifts that we can all benefit from. Racism and discrimination will only taint a persons spirit and force them to disconnect with their soul. I agree that there is “trauma” which manifests into rage. Children who are voiceless are suffering the most, first off they have no control over their circumstances and second they are powerless. I have worked for the coalition of the homeless for about 5 years. With the coalition I worked for a summer camp that was specifically for children from homeless and domestic violence shelters. The majority of the children at camp were inner city black and latino, either in shelters or recently out. These children have deep emotional scars and a majority are on medication for behavioral issues. It hurts me because I don’t always believe in medication, I believe that if you want change a persons behavior, you must change their environment. I’ve seen the most growth at camp in 2 months with these children, but I know that once camp is over they will be bounced around foster homes and targeted by police due to petty violations. I think It’s important to look at the child before their behavior because there is usually a story. We need to let
