In Paula Hawkins Girl on the Train, Rachel Watson is comforted by the idea of Megan and Scott Hipwells happy marriage because she turns to them for comfort and hope in her state of adversity of coming off of a divorce. While Rachel is on the train she sees this couple that she names Jason and Jess, also known by their real names as Meghan and Scott Hipwell. She envies their relationship because she is jealous of them. She creates a fantasy life for them as one of them as an Artist and one of them as a businessman who travels extensively. Whenever the train stops in Whitney,her old city she looks out to see if they are out there because it comforts her to see them either relaxing over a cup of coffee, as Tom and she had once done. Or when any affection is exchanged she feels more feelings of sadness in reminiscence of what her life had once been many years ago. Likewise, when Scott’s world was crushed as the plot formed and he lost his wife, Rachel’s was just hurt in the same way not so long ago.
After the killer of Meghan was discovered and killed, The London area of England was clearly no longer the place for Rachel. She decided to take some time off and go to Scotland to figure things out.
