Rachael's Short Story: Marching Like A Soldier

Improved Essays
Rachael walked as if she was marching like a soldier for three minutes straight. Her whole expression was that of a tense teenager looking like she got yelled by one of her peers. The other people passing by whispering to one another’s ear about her walk made herself aware of what she was doing and then halted at the scene. She gripped the end of her skirt and lifted her other hand to her face, covering her sight from the people she was passing. Her pace was a bit quicker now as she bit her lip, looking down.

You know what, this is probably a time waster. The almighty coin of choice is nothing like you to use. She lectured to herself. She was a little far from her dorm room, perhaps it’s best to give a shot tomorrow and see how that will unfold

The Good Soldiers by David Finkel is a non-fiction account of the harsh realities of war. After reading this novel, it becomes clear that America as a country is truly blind to not only how difficult it is for soldiers at war to witness the moments in battle, but also the daily activities that maintain their ability to survive. Written with candor by the Washington Post journalist Finkel who spent 8 months with a group of Iraq war soldiers known as the 2-16, his honest and heartbreaking depiction of the trials and tribulations of war and the toll it took on these men both physically and mentally leaves readers heartbroken and emotionally scarred. In the novel, Finkel chooses not to write from the first person perspective even though he witnessed the events take place.…

With great haste, and ample determination, I stealthily jockeyed to a gap that lied between Margaret’s stool and the wall that supported her leaning torso; where she lied motionless, visibly cold, and secluded amidst the shadows.
