Race vs. Ethnicity. Race can be de defined as a group of persons related by common descent or hereditary. Ethnicity can be defined as an ethnic group; a social group that shares a common and distinctive culture, religion and language. Race and ethnicity have many similarities but also many differences, your race can sometimes narrow down your ethnicity and if you know what ethnicity you are, you definitely know your race. You can tell a person’s race just by their physical appearance, but ethnicity is so much more complex, you can see the color of a person’s skin but that does not really tell you much information of their ethnic background. Race is a very powerful word that leads me to the word racism, hatred and intolerance of another race or group. The film I decided to critique was the movie called “The Help” which was about a group of African American maids probably in the 1960’s in Jackson, Mississippi during the Jim Crow years. They worked for white home owners, and they spoke about their lives as a maid, they portrayed the ill treatment, in justice and segregation of blacks versus the home life of an African American in the mid 1900’s. Also adding the story of a white woman who was an aspiring writer that did not fit in with the other people around her age, was not married and was against segregation.
