Race Reflection Essay

Great Essays
Three-fourths completed with sophomore year I was faced with the task of choosing classes for junior year. Upon filling out my schedule my space for a history class was left blank. I could recall hearing my older friends, who happened to be juniors and seniors, talk about Afro. Through many conversations the class was described as eye opening, interesting, and fun. It was surprising to hear kids who normally don’t like school have passion behind the words they spoke for this class. I was able to get insight during the black history assembly. Students in the class presented poems, artwork, and gave a performance demonstrating a deeper understanding of the unit at the time. Said experiences intrigued me very much as I felt our history was rich …show more content…
Just based off the title of the unit I wanted to hear more. Throughout my entire life I heard people specifically in America being classified by race. Without any question I accepted race as an existing concept that has been proven by scientist. Upon reading our first documents I learned that race itself was a construct. Scientists used race to classify people making it easier to results in data. Race only appears real when consequences and benefits of being a specific “race’ are evident in your day to day life. We see it come to life in the way black people are treated compared to whites. In recent times police brutality amongst people of African descent compared to those of european descent is night and day. The people of African descent are treated with more force and suspected of wrongdoing based solely off appearance. I have learned that theories such as the Degenerate Theory and Pre-Adamite Theory have solidified the use of race into real life. Words from respected scientist at the time were used by politicians, and other people in power to justify the treatment and laws put onto people who were not white. This unit in particular made me realize that everyone has a personal motive and will do whatever is necessary to achieve such outcomes. Sophomores who will learn this information need to truly understand that words from hundreds of years ago still affect them in many ways. Recognizing our history will allow us to

I agree with Dorothy Robert one hundred and ten percent. Race is a political grouping. It is not a biological category, so why do we make it one? There is scientific evidence to prove that people of all races are the same. “Chimpanzees have races; honeybees have races; we don’t have races.”…

Race relation is always a problem in the society. Different people have different feelings or opinions about races. It is hard to have race equality in a society, but we can eliminate inequality among races. Legal system can be an issue when there are discriminations, everyone should be treated equally when they are facing the legal system. For example, if someone has to use the legal system to do something, he/she should be treated equally no matter what race he/…

Many historians argue that race has played a central role in the history of the United States and I have to say that I completely agree with that statement. Everything that has occurred from the time slavery started to this present day has somehow affected race-to-race relations or was affected by the race-to-race relations. To this day people still fight for the equality of the races but that still hasn’t been able to completely happen just yet. For example the American to African American relations although they are not as bad as they used to be because, I don’t think anything can be compared to what many African Americans have had to go through in the Antebellum times there’s still many issues between the two races.…

Race is groupings of people believed to share common descent based on perceived innate physical similarities (Lecture 3/28/16). Some physical similarities include skin color, head and shape, hair color and texture, shape and size of the nose, eye color and shape, size and shape of the lips, body size, shape musculature, and size of genitalia (Lecture 3/28/16). To say that race is a social construction means that the concept of race results from a process of signification whereby only certain physical characteristics are attributed with meaning and are then used to organize populations into groups which are defined ‘races’ (Smith Lecture March 28). In my own words, this means that people are viewed based off of their race. With a person being…

The Social construction of Race Race-The Power Of Illusion video describes whether the race is biological myth or socially constructed. It mentions the views of normal people and people who are specialized in the anthropology, genetics or biologist on race. From that video, all research and argues open my eyes about the race construction in our society. I conclude that the racial is rooted in a false believe that it is characterized by the physical appearances like hair color, skin color, eye shape, body shape and so on and these characters are the key points to classify the different races.…

    Defining Racism

Race is an extremely important issue in the United States. Race and racism are subjects that are brought up during every presidential debate and they are also subjects that are constantly used when writing news articles. Before reading “Define Racism” I believed that racism was using preconceived notions about a group of people to make determinations about an individual who you believed was part of that particular race. Race, to me, was how people either classified themselves or how society classifies someone. Most of the changes in my views about race and racism came from watching Race: The Power of an Illusion and White People.…

Reading one Question: 1) Why was the social classification of race invented? Race being the social classification in which we distinguish one another by our ethnic and or regional background, enables us to not only create, but uphold systematic social status throughout the world. As proven through scientific research, race is not a substantive concept, but rather an unfounded concept that has been used to separate the human race overtime. This being the case, race was invented to create social class ranks; which sanctioned the appalling treatment of non-whites throughout the past couple of centuries. Is Afrocentrism a response to racism?…

To what degree does race impact my life? I knew for me and African Americans it was a very high percentage. I said about 80%. The reason I say 80% is because of my faith in God whom I believe is ultimately in charge of my life. So man’s power is limited.…

Ethnicity; a form of classification that’s primary focus is birth place, but is nonetheless based upon all aspects of social background including national identity, language, and in broader terms, sharing essential cultural values. Although, the prospects for which it is based upon are objective facts, in this essay we will be critically analysing: to what extent is ethnicity socially constructed? In order to answer the question, we will look what is a social construct; how’s and why’s ethnicity is constructed, and thus evaluate the importance of ethnicity. First and foremost, we consider the phrase of “social construct”; it is clearly evident that it illustrates a negative perception of the notion of ethnicity as the connotations around “construct” suggest it to be work of make-belief. Although to some extent, it is valid that it is not something that is substantially true nor “independently existent” (lectures) in itself, it should not be used to disrepute the significance of the subject.…

    Racial Pride Essay

When we hear the phrases ‘White power’ and ‘White pride’ our minds often jump to pictures of the KKK or modern neo-nazi groups in the US. Today, there are over 100 active neo-nazi groups - four of them currently active in Wisconsin. So while the United States government knowingly allows these hate groups to flourish, they dismantled groups like AIM, the Black Panther Party Movement and the Brown Berets that promoted justice, equality and services to their people. Groups like the Black Panther Movement were designed to serve the black community because at the time, no one would. Those groups openly expressed their racial pride, helped their people and made it acceptable to be a person of color in a society that makes it unacceptable and looked down upon.…

There are some things that are inevitable in live, including one's race and ethnicity. Race is a part of us that will always be with us. At times, we may wish that we could change our race, but we cannot; we must accept our ethnicity at some point in life to mature. We are all born to a certain group of group people before we have a choice to determine what that group may be. In my case, I was born into the Lebanese community, which includes multiple aspects.…

Observation I chose Representing Race (Asian Studies) class as a site to make observations of Temple students in order to relate to my chosen topic. I think this class is the most suitable as the course fulfill the Gen Ed Race and Diversity requirement. The class is quite informal where discussions and differences of perspectives are necessary. Thus, it is easier for me to observe the classroom behavior instead of major-related class where it only focuses on topics that stated in the course syllabus. As I am also a student in that class, I decided to observe the teaching methods and classroom behavior passively.…

Racial Diversity in Television The lack of diversity in modern day television is almost criminal. With television stations pretending to have racial diversity they run into the wall of using racial stereotypes for comedy to entertain the masses. The lack thereof racial diversity in modern television has led to many awful things such as; stations claiming to be racially diverse but just end up making fun of cultures with outdated stereotypes, also many holly wood block busters have little to none of the leads cast as anyone other than white male and female leads, I am also saddened to include award shows to the list of things contributing to the horrendous separation of whites and blacks in movies and television. So due to the facts about modern day media that we consume on a daily basis we are supporting the lack of racial diversity of today.…
