Discrimination In The Late 1800s

Improved Essays
People in the U.S have been discriminated against for a long time. Until the late 1800s, the inhabitants of the U.S have generally been Caucasians. Despite being a nation of immigrants, when people of different races such as Asian, Hispanics, or anything that isn’t Caucasians is involved, they are most likely going to be discriminated against simply for being different during those time. Presently, most people have come to understand more about the different sorts of race and ethnicity but not everyone decides to change their ways..Most of the time, people are discriminated based on their looks, abilities, or even a mistake they’ve made in the past. Eventually, people end up generalizing what certain groups are like and assumed that everyone …show more content…
When asked about what her experience in the U.S was like, she says that people assumes that people of her ethnicity are untrustworthy and admits that she had done things deserving those sort of stereotyping. Her exact words were: “I’m a Gypsy, so I always get the [you and your people are all thieves, con artists, swindlers, cheaters, crooks, and squatters] thing. But stereotyping exists for a reason, I was a thief and I had conned people in the past”.This is an example of prejudice because people assumed she is someone to watch out for because she is a Gypsy. To my understanding, it is in their culture to move around. Due to misinformation, people seem to think that they move around to avoid being caught scamming other people. Because of this reason, some Gypsies hide their ethnicity as to avoid being discriminated against because of who they are. While not all Gypsy are thieves, con artists, swindlers, cheaters, crooks, or squatters, most of them were notorious for doing such things which is why people tend to very prejudice toward them. But that doesn’t mean that we should discriminate Gypsies just because some members of their ethnic groups do these sorts of things. This is just one of the many reason that proves that stereotyping exists based on some …show more content…
Since Asians are the majority and every other race are the minority, I have never really been discriminated against myself so I couldn’t possibly know what it feels like. I can conclude that people suffering from discrimination are due to racism or prejudice or even both at times. Comparing how things were in the past and now, I can say with certainty that society in the U.S has improved tremendously. In the past, if you were not Caucasian you would most likely be discriminated against in many ways and there wasn’t many communities dedicated to a certain ethnic group. Now, it seems that people are generally treated fairly regardless of what their races and ethnicity is. That said, I think that the society still have a long way to go. Unfortunately, some people will refuse to change their ways and are still being racist to other even now for as long as they live. But as long as the society does what is right as a whole, I believe that as time goes by, even if some people will never change, perhaps the future generation will come to be cultural

In addition, immigrants are losing the sense of who they truly are in these country by the overwhelming cultural shock that they are going thru. However, the United States blame them for being immigrants and do not adapt to their rules and forms. In like manner, Aviva Chomsky reveals the myth that “The United States is a melting pot that has always welcomed immigrants from all over the world” (Chomsky 77). According to Chomsky the U.S. treats immigrants badly. For example, “People of African origin were nonpersons for the federal government, also they criminalized those who treated blacks as human beings rather than as property” (Chomsky 79).…

In America, a large percent of discrimination occurs against minority groups like African Americans, Latinos, and Asians. However out of these various minority groups, African Americans are the most affected minority group by racial discrimination. A great deal of this racial prejudice is because the government is not taking preventative measure to stop racial prejudice and segregation. Ever since the great migration, African Americans and other minority groups moved northward from their homes because of unsatisfactory economic opportunities and harsh segregationist laws, where they settled in communities with similar races. These minority communities are underdeveloped from an educational and socioeconomic standpoint causing minorities to live in impoverished areas facing racial prejudice.…

Stereotypes are unreliable generalizations about all members of a group and do not take individual differences into account. The willingness of people to assign positive and negative traits to entire groups of people, which are then applied to particular individuals. Over the last 80 years, social scientists have found that people have become less willing to express such views openly, but prejudice persists (Schaefer 2015). Throughout history, many immigrants have come to America and faced harsh discrimination. However, most of these immigrant groups assimilate fairly quickly and are accepted as Americans within a couple of generations. For Asian Americans and Latino Americans, though, it has been a different story. There are a few different reasons as to why Asian and Latino immigrants may have been and continue to be treated differently; these include, discrimination because of the color of their skin, their willingness to do hard work for low wages, nativism, and the strong community and ethnic bonds of Latino and Asian communities. Not unlike other immigrant groups, Latinos and Asian Americans faced harsh and brutal discrimination from white Americans.…
