The clamps release and we are shot forward like a bullet in a barrel. The wind rips through my hair, my head is flung back against the seat, by body locks, adrenaline rushing through me. All I see is blue. My heart races, blood pumping. Red and yellow streaks rush past. I soar higher and higher. My head is pressed firmly against the seat, my face being flattened by the strong wind. Then we pause, just for a moment at the top, suspended 420 feet above the ground. All I see is the lake and the bright blue sky. Falling, plummeting straight for the ground. The pavement lurches in front of me and then we are thrown forward, brakes screeching towards the finish line. It’s over in 17 seconds.
My brain can barely process what just happened.

Whistling down the zip line, tree leaves hit my outstretched arms and simultaneously form a collection of green leaves in my clenched palms. My body takes the sense of flying as freedom now surges through my veins. All of my distilled fear has escaped through every pore and replaced with a sense of success and joy. As I travel down the bend of the line, I see the ending. In a total state of flight, I march through the air to my destination.…

My heart sank as I jumped off the platform, afraid of hitting the wilderness below. The rope caught me, and I was gliding through the air. I can feel my whole body go numb when I hear the words, “You’re ready to fly,” come out of the microphone. We plunge towards the ground without any hesitation after the cord is released. I let out a scream so loud that my voice cracks like a 12 year old boy. At this point, I’m crying again and my friends want to punch me because we’re allowed to let go of each other and spread our arms out like birds, but I refuse to let go of my grip. It seems like this horrifying experience is never going to end.…

While it is uncomfortable to acknowledge that some of us have an unearned advantage in life thanks to things that we have no control over; such as gender, race, skin color, sexual orientation, accent and even wealth, it is important to discuss to better ourselves. As much as we, as individuals can continue to acknowledge and recognize our privilege it is practically impossible to discard or refrain from benefiting from the advantageous perks of the privileges. 0However, as we are able to see this invisible advantage many deny we can use our privilege to help and speak out and against the societal constructs. Lucky for me I have American, middle-class, straight and most of the time, white privilege. When I have a conversation with someone, with…

I was born on December 20th, 1996, in Vienna, Virginia. My incredible parents, Kevin and Melissa, are black and white respectively. They both grew up without a lot, but worked tirelessly, just as their parents had done before them, to ensure that my brother and I had everything that we needed, and most of what we wanted. Although we were well above middle class on a national scale, at our predominantly white all-boys private school filled with multi-millionaire families, we were outliers. That didn’t bother me until my freshman year of high school, when I noticed that the “cool” older kids, especially the black ones, all wore basketball shoes.…

While we were completing the activity during class, I noticed myself contemplating past events and all the moments in life that have brought me where I am today. At first, I was scared to step forward or back because I did not want to be judge by my fellow peers and thought it wouldn’t matter if I moved or not. However, after the first couple of questions I decided to answer honestly and noticed how much I have been discriminated in my life due to my economic class and race. Growing up in my household, my family never had enough money to afford luxurious goods such as designer brand clothing and the newest technological items. At times, we didn’t even have enough money to afford crucial necessities such as food and basic school supplies.…
