People scrambled away, panickedly jumping over anything in their path; their only goal to run as fast as they could out of there. Mobs of bodies were shrieking with fear, and finally her feet responded as they darted forward, following the rest of the fleeing group. “Get away!” her brain yelled. Her eyes blurred and she could hardly see, but her feet kept moving, tripping over themselves, but moving. By the time she saw the bar on the ground, it was too late. Before she knew it, she was falling, tumbling onto the ground, colliding with the rough surface and feeling her leg break with a disturbing snap. Helplessly she clawed, trying to pull herself up and flee, but it was no use. It was all over now… …show more content…
The three of us, Alicia, Sarah, and I, were running our warm up before our first big track meet of the season as she panicked over running the 100m hurdles. The harsh wind was blowing relentlessly in our faces making them numb, and the sky was awfully gray and cloudy for an April day. When one thinks of Iowa, one does not necessarily think of cultural diversity. The more and more I think about it as I have matured, it was exceedingly challenging to grow up as an Asian in my community. That is because I sometimes had trouble understanding the culture of others and my own culture at my young age. When I was younger, I found it very challenging to understand many of the things my peers and teachers were saying figuratively. For example, I had difficulty understanding jokes, so I took them literally and did not know they were joking.…

While it is uncomfortable to acknowledge that some of us have an unearned advantage in life thanks to things that we have no control over; such as gender, race, skin color, sexual orientation, accent and even wealth, it is important to discuss to better ourselves. As much as we, as individuals can continue to acknowledge and recognize our privilege it is practically impossible to discard or refrain from benefiting from the advantageous perks of the privileges. 0However, as we are able to see this invisible advantage many deny we can use our privilege to help and speak out and against the societal constructs. Lucky for me I have American, middle-class, straight and most of the time, white privilege. When I have a conversation with someone, with…

I was born on December 20th, 1996, in Vienna, Virginia. My incredible parents, Kevin and Melissa, are black and white respectively. They both grew up without a lot, but worked tirelessly, just as their parents had done before them, to ensure that my brother and I had everything that we needed, and most of what we wanted. Although we were well above middle class on a national scale, at our predominantly white all-boys private school filled with multi-millionaire families, we were outliers. That didn’t bother me until my freshman year of high school, when I noticed that the “cool” older kids, especially the black ones, all wore basketball shoes.…

Another tragic memory that pumped some sense into my head about racial identity and ethnic disparities; was when my elder brother was arrested on the basis of being black. My brother was wrongfully arrested because a Caucasian officer expressed that he saw him rob someone. Upon arrival at the scene trying to understand what happened, that officer expressed in his words that “ nigger you know you robbed that store”. I couldn’t believe that this was happening to me because, I have always heard about situations like this. The officer made more remarks such as, “you niggers are always stealing”, “you niggers will always be shit”, and you are going to pay for this crime even if you did not do it.…

When I assert “I am white” it means that I have never had to question who I am as a person based on my race. I have never had to question the way I was treated just based upon the color of my skin. This calls to the social construction of race. I hardly ever have to question my race because I am white. Those of other races often fight internal battles where they question, “Is the reason I was just treated this way attributed to my race?”…

I had the identity of a Claremont Academy alumna, a school composed of many ethnic minorities, however, I was also now a student of the College of the Holy Cross, an elite private college. I had never thought of my identity as a student from Main South to be a problem until academic institutions such as Holy Cross kept imposing and cultivating such idea. It was only when I began to network outside of my communities, that I began to realize that I truly live in between two different worlds. What startled me the most was understanding the complexity of why a great gap of opinions existed between two communities in the same city. Furthermore, during the time I began college, I learned how important my racial and ethnic identity was to me.…

I never really thought too much about racism when growing up. Maybe that is due to my upbringing. I was raised in a small diverse country town where, for the most part, everyone got along. Not to say that there was no racism; it just was not seen very often. Some would call me lucky to have been so naïve in my microcosm.…

¬¬Cultural and ethnic identities are not things that you are born with. Sure your ethnic heritage may determine things like the color of your skin, but an ethnic identity stretches far deeper than just skin color. Cultural and ethnic identities are things that are learned over time. They are formed through a collection of teachings, experiences, and choices. This autobiography will explore how my ethnic and cultural identities developed throughout my life.…
