Imagine being an African American male in a country that is dominated by the white race, Trying to get a job to maintain a household and take care of your family. Think how much easier it would be if you were a white male in a white dominated society. Now picture a society where no matter what race you are everyone has the same opportunities. Many believe that race, gender, and culture play a huge role in our everyday lives and determine your future. However, race, gender and culture do not determine who/what you become in your life.

Although, there gender norms taught to us by the world since birth, people should look past them. As a child you are told “ that’s a girl color”, “that’s a girl toy”, etc but who is to tell someone what they can and can’t be. In an interview with the Chicago Times a man was asked if careers were classified by sex and he stated, “ Yes, I mean when a nurse is about to come into the examination room I expect a woman. When I need the electrician or plumber to fix something, I expect a man to bring his toolbox”(Dinsdale,2016). When President Obama was asked if gender mattered he stated, “Our journey is not complete.” He was talking about society’s acceptance of women. And our journey will only be delayed by misinterpreting the science of gender differences, imposing arbitrary 50/50 goals, or squabbling amongst ourselves. I hope we can lay these disputes to rest and cooperate towards our mutual goals”(Hall,2013).
