Race, Gender, And Social-Class

People see and describe culture in many different ways. Culture could be different characteristics and knowledge of a particular group, for example characteristics such as language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts. Growing up we are experiencing and learning many different cultures from our peers and our communities, but do people ever think about how these different characteristics can affect who we are? Even the most simple of characteristics that fall under culture can impact us. People may never notice how these things affect who we are and who we will be, characteristics such as our race, gender, and social-class. My race is very common in Hawaii, where I grow up. I identify myself as a Filipino, but in Hawaii most ethnicities that are of “Asian” decent are usually just called Asians. Social class can be to someone’s paycheck at the end of the year to the clothes we wear, the music we listen to, or even the schools we go to. All these attributes have strong influences on how we interact with each other. People in the different social classes have different views on the world, we see that in debates and peoples actions every day. Since I was born, my family seems to be in the middle class, meaning that we had money, but both my mom and dad had one main job and one part time job. Although, we had money, my parents were working most of the time. My family came here from the Philippines when they were young, so they didn’t have the life that my brother and I had growing up. My brother and I were well taken care of, sometimes I could even say we were spoiled. Although I can say we grew up steadily, my parents were the type that wanted us to grow up, and have the ability to take care of
