Superior Essays
Race discrimination has become a huge problem. The issue isn’t as bad as it was in the 1900s, but it is still bad. Remember The Titans and Hidden Figures are both movies about race discrimination and how everyone accepts each other for who they are and not their skin colour at the end. But, the way both movies portray the racism is completely different. Characters, symbolic moments and the main idea are what will be the focus. These three topics will explain how race discrimination was back then and how the people in the movies accepted each other. The characters in the movie are similar but use their similarities to point out specific differences in the films. The characters in Hidden FIgures and Remember The Titans have similar thoughts …show more content…
Although their thoughts regarding racism are the same the way they confront racism is different. Coach Boone and Katherine are similar because they’re playing roles that face similar situations. Coach Boone had become the first African American coach in football history. He fought for his spot as the Head coach when he was being discriminated from all angles. He made the team unite and changed societies vision on African American people. On the other hand, Katherine also fought for her spot at NASA. She became the first African American women to attend a board meeting. She also achieved other accomplishments such as helping the USA launch a shuttle into space. Both Coach Boone and Katherine will go down as iconic figures in African American history. The way both movies confront racism is different. The characters in Remember The Titans take a more physical stand against racism. In the beginning, they show a crowd of people creating a riot because someone got shot because of their skin colour. That shows that the people are aggressive. At the training camp, when the players of different skin colours had an argument, they went straight into a fist fight. Hidden …show more content…
Some are similar and some of them are different. The symbols that are similar are Gary’s girlfriend's handshake with Julius and the gift of a pearl necklace to Katherine by her co-workers. Both these symbols represent a form of friendship and acceptance. Towards the beginning of Remember The Titans, when Gary introduces Julius to his girlfriend and Julius put his hand forward for a handshake, she doesn’t shake his hand and says, “Gary, you might’ve excepted these people, but I haven’t.” Then, towards the end of the story, before Julius goes in on defense, Gary’s girlfriend comes up to Julius and say “I don’t think we had a chance to meet before,” and she puts forward her hand and Julius shakes it. This shows acceptance because Gary’s girlfriend accepted Julius. It also shows friendship because they have become friends. In Hidden Figures, Katherine bursts ut saying she can’t afford pearls because people of her skin colour don’t get paid enough money to afford pearls. The towards the end of the story, Katherine’s co-workers gift her a pearl necklace. I think this shows friendship and acceptance too because, at the beginning of the film, no one would’ve done this for her, but now she has helped NASA accomplish great

Racism is when discrimination becomes apart of the bigger norm of society in which the majority people discriminate against the minority. Examples of racism in Remember the Titans is displayed in a variety of ways. One of the best examples is how the Board of Education in the film wants Coach Yoast to throw a game for the football players so that Coach Boone can be fired and Coach Yoast can secure his spot in the Hall of Fame (Yakin, 2000). Luckily, by this point in the film, Coach Yoast has fully entered the immersion stage and realizes what is happening in the world around him is not normal, but just plain malicious, cruel, and downright wrong. He refuses to comply and stands up for Coach Boone and the wrong that is being committed against him and the other members of the Black community.…

The novel is not a true story but is based on life at the time whereas the film is based on real events that happened.
