Analysis Of Appiah's Race, Culture, Identity: Misunderstood Connections

Improved Essays
Appiah in his writing Race, Culture, Identity: Misunderstood Connections talks about race and brings up an example of a garçon de café, also known as a waiter. Appiah says a person decides to become a waiter and within that choice is a set of expectations and situations where that person is expected to be a waiter. In the person’s place of work the waiter (garçon de café) dresses a certain way, greets people a certain way and puts plates of food and beverages in front of customers. In a different social situation these behaviors would not be appropriate. To bring it back to race Appiah says it would not make sense to ask someone who is employed as a waiter (garçon de café) if that is what they really are. He says, however, it would make sense …show more content…
As an RA I was always told that it is like being in a fish bowl. When I am in the halls and on campus I am expected to act a certain way because my residents will be watching me as an example. When I was on duty I was expected to act a certain way and do my role as a resident assistant like rounds, bulletin boards, writing people up, and taking care of students ' issues. Outside of a resident hall or campus setting these roles would not make sense. Like it would not make sense for me to write up my family for being loud during quiet hours, because it is a different social setting. Being a resident assistant was a script of mine, or social role I was playing, it would not have made sense to ask if while I was a resident assistant if that is what I really was. My identity or place in the greater society was not based off my role as a resident …show more content…
This person may have a very pale skin tone, green eyes and straight hair. If this person dresses a certain way and lives in a predominantly white neighborhood and people do not know whom their father is, they could pass as a white person. It could be reversed as well, you can have a white person who tans their skin, perms their hair, with brown eyes and dark hair living in a predominantly black neighborhood and if no one knows who their parents are they could pass as black, because they fit the racial script. Even if both people are not trying to pass as a certain race, like the mixed person could not be hiding they are mixed and the white person can not be hiding they are white, but society will disconnect and put a label on the person based off of their appearance and racial script they mostly fit into. Different racial labels will put that person at different advantages and disadvantages within

Identifying with more than one culture can be confusing and many people seem to think they have a say in what someone identifies as. Like Obama, I am mixed. While reading the essay “Why Obama Should Not Have Checked ‘Black’ on His Census Form” written by Elizabeth Change, I felt sorry for Obama. I understand that he had a good opportunity to represent the multiracial community, however, what race a person choses to identify with is their decision. Obama is mixed and has the right to identify more with one than another. The author Elizabeth Chang makes the point that he may identify as black since he looks more black than white.…

In regard to being a Resident Assistant, it is more important to be well-respected. I think it's okay to be liked by the residents, but I don't think it should be to the point where they think they can take advantage of you and break rules. Just because someone is liked doesn't mean that they shouldn't be respected as well. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. Most off the time, when someone is well-liked, it is because they are nice and easy to talk to.…

As human beings, it is our nature to group and label different items in our world. But how does one describe themselves? Our self-identity, in my opinion, makes us feel like someone. Self-identity includes our race, language, sexual orientation, culture, and many other attributes of ourselves including visual components such as body type. But according to Michael Hogg and Scott Reid, categorizing people holds them accountable to other similar groups and depersonalizes an individual person.…

Imagine you are at an art museum and you find yourself in the abstract art section, the cubism, surrealism, fauvism. You gaze at the paintings with confusion, questions, and wonder trying to figure out what they mean. You look around and catch a glimpse of others around you with similar expressions. These sights of confusion, questions, and wonder are constants in my life. Similar to an abstract painting, people are confused by my appearance, and yet I have no discombobulated body like a Picasso or Dalí paintings.…

Construction of Race in the United States Race is, according to Merriam-webster.com (2015), “a class or kind of people unified by shared interests, habits, or characteristics”. The perceptions regarding race have changed and developed over a period of time (Winant, 2000). In the past, the concepts regarding race were viewed from a biological construction standpoint and had constantly contained specific aspects such as geographical location, heredity, and physical features (Winant, 2000; Graves, 2010). However, around the world and in the United States, social construction is mostly used to identify one’s race (Winant, 2000).…

It is the same with any ethnic group or someone’s culture that society doesn’t understand, so society makes it hard for any other ethnic group to maintain their beliefs. Why is it hard for the Jewish people to maintain identity so difficult in the United States? All different cultures in the United States feel pressured to continue holding onto their cultural heritage. For the Jewish people this is hard because they highly value their ethnicity. Some Jewish people feel out of place and also excluded due to their culture, and some choose to resemble what is the "norm" and in doing so they can lose a sense of their Jewish identity .…
