The topic of own-race teacher student relationships has been the subject of research a few times but nothing concrete has been found. This article follows students in Florida for 8 years based on their current school system and focuses on their math and reading skills. This research expanded on previous research because it followed students from grade 3 - 10 while a previous one did K - 3. I hope to go even further with my research and track students from K - 12, I think this is the best way to get a full understanding of student to teacher relationships. The research done in this article placed students in their classrooms according to an algorithm. This helped with randomization of the study; however, there were some complications the algorithm could not account for such as students being assigned to more than one teacher for a certain subject and the teacher grading the assignments. Furthermore, this research allows me to look for key relationships between students and teachers such as mentorship, role models, and cultural advocates and see if that help contributes to student …show more content…
It explores the idea that teachers of the same ethnical background are more effective role models for students than others and that may contribute to students’ success. Economic status is also talked about as a potential for causing error in their analysis and potential error. This study used a random matching to observe their students. However this experiment was not designed to evaluate the relationship between own race and student success. I hope that from our research I are able to observe the relationship between own race and student success through natural observation of a diverse school and not having to randomly assigned students. This article also brings up the fact that if we push for too much diversity in teachers to help minority students we are then being counterproductive to the other students in the classroom. This experiment reminds us to focus on what I want to identify and make sure that our observation is designed to measure what I want to see. In addition, it reminds us that we are trying to find a healthy balance in school diversity to help all students succeed. (Teachers, Race, and Student Achievement in a Randomized Experiment.
