Race is understood as a category that is real in its effects in social life. Ethnicity refers to the cultural practices and outlooks of a given community of people that set them apart from others. Ethnicity is a wholly social phenomenon, learned through processes of socialization and central to many in the formation of individual and social identities. Racism is the belief that some individuals and institutions are superior or inferior to others based upon a racialized understanding of socially significant physical distinctions. This system of ine1uality also works as system of power which determines peoples’ social location which is supported by ideological beliefs that makes things appear normal and acceptable. The members of this system, race, class and gender are not fixed categories and even their interrelation changes which means the social change is possible. Everybody has their place in the society according to the system of inequality as it can be compared to a basketball game. Such as, it is seemingly noticeable that in American basketball teams most of the players are African American not because of their physical strength or skill but for their only chance of having a good job. This defines race, and also basketball game can define class too. From the game the players are benefited but there are some other people, like the sponsors, educational institutions which are the higher level. There are also some people who work as service workers and staffs who are in the lower level of the basketball game system. Gender is not an exception in the basketball games. Gender discrimination is seen when there are less women in different parts. Yang elucidates more about ethnicity and traditional disciplinary research methods used in ethnic studies such as field research experiment and survey research. Social scientists prefer these survey researches because of their ability to explore wide range of issues. Author Yang stated the ethnic and racial inequality both individual and institutional. This inequalities divide the ethnic and racial group into dominant group and subordinated group. He stated to have ethnic stratification in human societies there should be two or more ethnic groups and those groups must have interrelation with each other. In this book author mentioned the theories which cause ethnical stratification. Such as social-Darwinian perspective maintains that the stratification is a result of an inborn instinct on the part of stronger groups to dominate weaker groups. And also social-psychological perspective, functionalist perspective, conflict perspective and Donald Noel’s theories that argues that ethnic stratification in maintaining social stability. He also talked about the emergence of the black slavery system which was a black/white stratification. Andersen and Collins’ “System of power and Inequality follows the same aspect as Phillip’s “Ethnic Studies: Issues and Approaches” with the ethnic and racial inequality in the society and how they create social
