Race And Human Variation Analysis

I've decided to write my response on "Race and Human Variation." Reason being is that I don't consider myself to be any type of race. I just consider myself to be human. I feel as if race tends to separate us more than unite as. Race is something that man made. The more that people educate themselves on this matter, the closer we get to world unity, which is still as far as can be from man's reach, but it brings us a step closer. As I went through the flash video on "Race and Human Variation" all I kept thinking was "people need to understand this!" The origins of our species originated in Africa and our skin color is due to our geographical background. This is something that both my brother and I try to spread in

I agree with Dorothy Robert one hundred and ten percent. Race is a political grouping. It is not a biological category, so why do we make it one? There is scientific evidence to prove that people of all races are the same. “Chimpanzees have races; honeybees have races; we don’t have races.”…

He shows through his book that race is a ‘recent social and political construction” (Graves Jr. 1). He wants to show the reader that there is no scientific support to separate humans into races. I agree with him that people are not born to view race. It is something learned through the social atmosphere and practiced through generations.…

Race was culturally invented to try and fit everyone into five different races; black, brown, yellow, red, and white. Using the various races to their advantage, the Europeans created a new social structure putting them at the top of the food chain while leaving the Africans and the Indians at the bottom. In this chapter along with the other material given the goal is to prove that everyone is from the same species. They explain that race is not biologically real, there are no genetic markers that define race. Skin color along with other traits, face shape, and eye color, are adaptations that evolved due to the environmental conditions exposed to our ancestors.…

Nina Jablonski's in her TED talk about race eloquently explained the differences in human skin color. For many centuries, the color of the human skin was the one feature determining the value of a person. For years, people suffered, forcibly removed from their homes, families and everything they knew and loved, and were sold as objects into slavery. They dehumanized, stripped of their rights, dignity, beaten, abused, and killed, simply because their skin was dark. Slavery might be the thing of the past, but its echo reverberates in or society to this day.…

It was nearly inevitable that the different races would reproduce together but the mixing of races was not always tolerated. Over centuries years ago people with colored skin were not allowed to communicate with a white person. African Americans were thought to be inferior and their extinction was inevitable. In the video Race: The Power of an Illusion it was stated that blacks were taken through surgical procedures so that each of their body parts could be measured and compared to those of a white person. There were no differences found yet white people asserted that blacks and whites were completely…

In the article, “Culture, Not Race Explains Human Diversity” by Mark Nathan Cohen, Cohen elucidates the concept of races not existing and that there is an additional in-depth understanding needed to teach students the correct perspective to a non-racist view when classifying humans. He goes on to explain that us humans differ in a multitude of ways and cannot be simply classified or interpreted by the general standards that are usually set. Looking into the science behind it, he continues to clarify that even genetics can’t merely classify a human based on certain characteristics for being intelligent or how closely related you are to someone. There are so many combinations and factors that contribute to each individual that it’s not as simple as separating people into black and white categories. Cohen further believed that in order for this idea to be communicated effectively, a stress should be put on the understanding of culture.…

“The End of Race: Hawaii and the Mixing of Peoples” indicate the differences and similarities between people of diverse races and ethnicity. Steven Olson applies the frequencies of genetic mutations in the mitochondria, migration from one continent to another and racially mixed populations where the target is the most American state of Hawaii. Should the world be concerned about the end of the singular genetic ethnicity of each race? And is it going to happen? Race most likely will disappear as we now know.…

Genetic variation is the differences between everyone and everything. Genetic variation is important because it creates variation/ differences between everything and everyone. The final instance proven by scientists was that there doesn’t seem to be substantial evidence that race, looked upon as a biological category and “"racial" characteristics, such as skin color, hair texture, and eye shape, are linked to behavior, to capacities, to individual and group accomplishments, to cultural institutions, or to propensities to engage in any specific activities.” After looking at these three examples it is easy for me to agree with these…

Through the various discussions in the class, I’ve heard comments about how the concept of race has caused problems of dividing people, whether as exclusion in history or as an inclusive way to address a group’s inequalities. Race has come up multiple times as a controversial term that is socially constructed showing the negative roles people have had in society. I feel that each time I hear about US history, when race comes up, it brings up pessimistic tensions that have further split the country. Race is important in the US; we see this with the past problems of inequality and the sparks of the Civil Rights Movement, along with the current struggles of uproar in our neighborhoods with various racial groups coming together to take a stand in our political situations. Race relation is one of the most important problems facing the US, where young, unarmed black men are killed by officers.…

All throughout time, people have been divided due to their differences. People who see others that are different from them will often immediately decide that they are “weird” and put those people lower than themselves. According to Linda Holtzman and Leon Sharpe in their passage, “Theories and Constructs of Race,” Race is just a social construct made by humans to exclude people based on what they look like, where they are from, their culture, etc. If scientists were to look at someone’s deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) compared to another person with, say, different colored skin, they would notice that there is not much of a difference between the two people. Therefore, as Holtzman and Sharpe say, “race is constructed socially, culturally, politically,…
