Ms. Smith And Wesley: Ethical Case Study

Analyzing the ethical case between Ms. Smith and Wesley helped me gain awareness of ethical dimensions and practices. When Ms. Smiths phone went missing she viewed Wesley as a disadvantaged citizen in an unjust society. The reading does not state that Wesley stole his teachers phone, but educational policies persuaded Ms. Smith to believe so. The dilemma arises when Ms. Smith has to determine whether to follow the zero-tolerance policy or report her phone missing to higher authority. Principles of the dilemma compete because of the values at stake, and Ms. Smith has to determine her line of action to prioritize her student over herself. The reading illustrates class discussions we have had on privilege between different race and ethnicities, and can relate to the ethical dilemma Ms. Smith’s encountered that I may face in the future. After reading, the central dilemma is Ms. Smith decision to follow her signed teacher contract by reporting Wesley. Ms. Smith is encouraged by Mr. Jackson to follow structured social order from the zero-tolerance policy because of NHS’s student demographic. Ms. Smith decision to give Wesley another chance to succeed in school promotes education and builds opportunity for disadvantaged students. Ms. Smith can teach Wesley the skills needed to succeed, while painting a good relationship with other students and faculty. I related the ethical dilemma to my own life because I will be making split minute decisions in the business world based on the values at stake. The reading opened my eyes about minority schooling in under-privileged neighborhoods and the obstacles they face. I believe that Ms. Smith should reach out before major consequences arise and ease the burden that discourage students like Wesley from achieving an education in an unjust
