She also argues that we automatically place each individual into one of the two exclusive gender groups. Lucal brings up a great point and says that people who follow the norms of gender take their gender for granted. I definitely take mine for granted. Desmond and Emirbayers describe that the world comes to you. You don’t choose what race you are. They define race as a symbolic category based on a phenotype or ancestry. It is something that is created and recreated by human beings. I am partly Jewish because of my ancestry. My grandpa is Jewish so that makes me party Jewish because of him. Race is also based on phenotype. Phenotype is his or appearance and constitution including skeletal structure, height, hair texture, eye color, and skin tone. I am about 5’9 with very thick short brown hair, brown eyes and I am also white. My race is a Partly Jewish white male because of my ancestry. Desmond and Emirbayer argue that there are different historical contexts around the world. Many groups were organized in each country in the 1990’s and 2000’s. With immigration it was way easier for whites to enter the United States. The history of America’s immigration shows the intimate conception between race and ethnicity. Additionally, Desmond and Emirbayer talk about racial domination. Whites have had many opportunities while others have suffered. I take being white for granted because of the disadvantages that other races have. Domination in society is very evident in society
