The unaccepting world creates inevitable racial tension and prejudice. This plays a crucial role in Othello’s life. As a racial minority, Othello greatly suffers. Early in the play, Iago makes known to Brabantio that Othello, a black man, is violating his daughter, a white woman. Iago declares,

The death of Desdemona at the hands of Othello is the end result of many attacks against character and skin color. Meredith Skura writes that this play is a play about prejudice. Her comment is absolutely accurate because the driving force behind the devastation is prejudice against both race and gender. One of the outcomes is Othello’s mistrust of his wife. Emilia shouts, “Thou art rash as fire to say that she was false. O, she was heavenly true! (Shakespeare V.ii.119). He did not believe and trust his wife, which eventually led him to kill her. He furtively weds the King Brabantio's little girl, Desdemona, who is Caucasian, accordingly making pressures inside the kingdom. Iago who is to some degree a colleague to Othello gets to know him, yet just out of envy from Othello position in the Army. In Shakespeare’s Othello, and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, prejudice is the main theme in both well known stories. In Othello, it takes place in a mostly white community, where Othello, a black man, comes in and marrys the Senators daughter Desdemona and becomes the leader of the Army. He is respected from the soldiers but is hated by many people for being black and having such a high role in the town. Also many dislike him because he is with Brabantio's daughter, who many would like to be with.…

Othello’s many shortcomings, from his insecurities, personality, and pride, were the ultimate reasons for his and Desdemona’s downfall; Iago simply accelerated the process. Othello’s vulnerability to those around him—from pressures of being a black man in a white society, to his all-trusting naiveté in a man who despised him, to his clouded judgment and rash behaviour with his final confrontation of Desdemona; drove him to the brink of insanity and was the cause of his death. Othello represents the incompatibility of marriage that comes with some due to the complete fault of one…

Othello wasn’t a character that was easily jealous or unstable, but was driven unstable by one of the character, Iago. I believe that Shakespeare used the typical stereotype of black males and tried to portray this image in Othello. Shakespeare used Othello and their interactions to reflect the racial inequality of his time. Shakespeare used this to imply that racism was a terrible problem in Europe, showing the viewers the effects of stereotyping and cultural inequality.…

It “leans on racism” (Is Othello A Racist Play? Highlights with subtitles) and uses it dramatically and for symbolism. Even though Iago is a Venetian and has white skin, he is the “pole of moral negativity” (Garber 592), and Othello, even though he is a moor, has been given the characteristics of an upstanding white man. Iago is black on the inside and white on the outside while Othello is white on the inside and black on the outside. This symbolic comparison is only possible with the archetypal meanings of the words black and white and Iago’s race and Othello’s race.…

There are many instances in the play Othello where gender roles become significant. During Shakespeare’s time, men hold the power and women are perceived as weak and powerless. Also, women are expected to be submissive to their man by doing whatever he asks of her and this is very apparent in the play Othello. The role of women in the play, determines the plot and the fate of some of the character’s involved. “The meaning of Othello’s murdering Desdemona depends on their marriage and their marriage’s meaning is invested in Othello’s blackness” (Little 306). The racism drove him crazy and Iago didn’t make it better. When Iago tells Othello that Desdemona was cheating on him, he thought that his blackness and Moorish characteristics changed her and made her do it because Iago and other characters like Brabantio said it would. When Othello killed Desdemona, his literal blackness became metaphorical (Little 322).…

Iago looks at Othello as a lesser human being due to his different racial background which is evident when Iago wakens Brabantio with the news of his daughter’s recent elopement with the Moor. Iago tries to turn Brabantio against Othello saying “Even now, now, very now, and old black ram is tupping your white ewe” (1.3.90-91). Iago uses animal imagery and compares Othello to an old black ram which introduces racial association of black versus white. Iago discriminates Othello as a human being and compares him to an aggressive animal, leading Brabantio to become more enraged and think that Desdemona is under certain witchcraft for falling in love with a black man.…
