Ethnic Cleansing and Genocide

One of the biggest questions that most people ask when referring to America history has to deal with Native Americans. The question is simple: what happened to the Native Americans when Europeans settled into what is now America? Most people will go on to say that European settlers were the best thing that happened to Native Americans. However, that is not the case. The purpose of this paper is to examine what happened to Native Americans by defining genocide, ethnic cleansing and evaluating the current social status of Native Americans.
First and foremost, it is important to define what genocide is. The term actually did not exist before the year of 1944. People generally have a misconception about what genocide exactly is. There are various definitions of it, but most often than not, genocide is the deliberate killing of a rather large ethnic group. It is the extermination of mass populations within a specific group done by a more dominant group. These things often happen slowly or very quickly. The Holocaust, to be exact, is an example of genocide. The Jews had suffered from a variety of violent and painful experiences by the hands of Germans under the control of Adolf Hitler. Hitler had the intention to completely destroy the existence of Jews and eliminate them at high velocities. The Holocaust is considered the most popular, for better lack of words, example of genocide against an ethnic group.
