Rabbit (shope) fibromatosis is caused by fibroma virus, a member of the poxvirus group and was isolated in the United States from a cottontail rabbit in 1932(Percy & Barthold, 2007, p. 258). It produces tumors and is transmitted where husbandry allows contact with insect vectors (Kahn, 2010, p. 1733). Research by Mitchell and Tully (2009) stated, “Clinical signs include subcutaneous, nonattached, wart-like fibromas on the legs or feet and around the muzzle and eyes” (p. 387). The tumors that develop can persist for several months before disappearing and the rabbit can appear to be completely normal afterwards (Kahn, 2010, p. 1733).
