During my junior year of high school, I was nominated by my school’s faculty for the Rotary Youth Leadership Award program (RYLA). RYLA is a leadership camp awarding students who have demonstrated leadership abilities and a passion for making a difference in the world. Out of my entire junior class, I was selected to attend based after a rigorous essay and interview process. This camp provided me the opportunity to hear motivational speakers from all walks of life speak about their stories on overcoming adversity, perseverance and qualities of an effective leader from the civilian sector.
