When asked the question, “Why do you want to become an RPLS major?” I automatically think of this past year. A year ago, I was unsure what I wanted to do as a career. I had declared a major in Athletic Training, but I wasn’t set on making it my career. I was having a conversation with a friend one day, and she advised me to look into the RPLS major. To be honest, I didn’t know much about the major prior to talking to her. When I went to research the major, I learned about the emphasis of therapeutic recreation. Learning about what therapeutic recreation specialist do for their occupation was something I could picture myself doing. This semester, I am taking the Therapeutic Recreation Services class. One of the first things I learned in this class is that therapeutic recreation is about helping people to live well and to flourish as human beings. I think a career in RPLS would be a great fit for me because I want to do exactly that. I hope by the end of this essay you will agree as well. I acquired my first major leadership role in recreation this past summer. I have volunteered to assist with my church’s vacation bible school for the last six years and this past summer I got offered the leadership position. I am now in charge of organizing the bible school and making sure everything runs smoothly. I attended …show more content…
The best way for me to do this is to first get into the RPLS program. I then hope to graduate with a certification in therapeutic recreation. I want to have a career working in a nursing home or assisted living as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist doing rehab and activities. My desire is to make sure each resident has the same opportunities to do what they love because everyone has different hobbies and interests.
