RISD Museum

Upon entering the RISD museum I was greeted by the quaint streets of the historic east-side of Providence. It's often an overlooked part of town due to the city life but really earns it's merit in beautifully restored colonial homes and colorful street art. The streets had tall green trees that bordered the sidewalk perfectly, and the light post were littered with local stickers either for a cause or promoting a local artist. Luckily, I was able to find parking rather easily because I went on an off day. With the car parked, I was ready to venture into the museum. Once inside I was a little underwhelmed with the entrance. I had seen so many pictures of the museum on Instagram or other social media platforms that I expected the entry way to be a little more grand. Instead it was a few steps down with some small …show more content…
I immediately dashed for the contemporary art part of the museum. For me, contemporary art resonates with me and I appreciate the bold lines and minimalism that comes with the style of artwork. The exhibit was beautiful, and bold in color. The walls in which the artwork hung was a stark white, which really allowed the colors to bounce off the walls and each other. "This exhibit was created in 2000 and the oldest piece that resides in the collection is from 1960" (RISD). I found it quite interesting that 1960 was still considered contemporary, but when I visited the Ancient Art exhibit, I had a better understanding why it was a better fit here. The first piece that I was really drawn to was bright red with blue lines that radiate from the center of the piece, it makes you feel like the lines go past your body while you're looking at it. Truly the only adjective that came to mind when I looked at this piece was 'engulfing'. It's pieces like this that really draw me to contemporary pieces because it can really make

My trip to the Barnes Foundation museum was enjoyable and informative. On my trip, as we moved through the galleria I was astounded by how the rooms in the galleria were arranged. It was not like your average museum, with one or two paintings on the walls with a description of it underneath. Instead, there were rooms with paints all over the walls, along with iron work that correlated with the pieces. Our tour guide elaborated on how he did not wish for there to be a description under the pieces of art stating their background.…

At the opening there is a large canvas advertising what is perhaps the collection’s most representative piece, Loligo Bianconi, a glass squid with blue rings around its eye and pink dots leading down its mantle. Next to the sign the exhibit appears to break off into a room and seemingly separate long hallway that bleeds into the next exhibit. To best appreciate the lay one should start in the room. Before walking in, the polychromatic light of a tv screen is visible. People are seated on a pair of cushioned seats staring at a screen which displays an older glass smith working on a glass sculpture of a woman.…

While heading to Grammy Museum I was able to arrive before it open, I waited for about 15 minutes outside. While waiting I was able to walk around and see the Grammy Awards that have been won throughout the years. They were displayed on the sidewalk heading towards the Museum. I was able to identity some bands and artists that I knew such as; Ray Charles, Norah Jones as well as Green Day. I was truly surprised to have seen these names displayed.…

The Dallas Museum of Art was the complete opposite of what I imagined it to be like. Before attending the museum, I had very low expectations. When I thought of “art museum” I imagined dusty walls lined with undiverse and outdated art. I imagined a place old couples went to because they had nothing better to do with their time. A place where the past lingered and grew old as civilization quickly moved on and forgot about it.…

I like your description of the Getty Museum visit, and the idea of the continuity of styles and movements through the museum display. Last spring, I took APU class Modernism and Museum in which I learned about the efforts of Alfred Barr that actually developed the concept of the museum display that made transitions and influences of modernistic styles from one to another appear coherent and logical. People who has never seen Cezanne, Seurat, Van Gogh, Matisse and Picasso in a sequential order would have a problem to understand Pollock or Rothko. Great post! Thank you, It was a pleasure to be in the same group.…

The outside of the building belies how wonderfully big the museum is and the amazing colors of the floors. The front of the museum looks rather modern with just a hint of Islamic Temple art in the middle of the building, and you can see a white colored dome with what looks to be towards the middle of the building. The windows display pieces of clothing that an Islamic woman would wear called…

Gallery Report According to Confucius, “Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.” As a NIACC student taking Art History II, I agree with Confucius, there is beauty in everything, but not everyone sees it. When viewing the North Iowa Area Community College Auditorium Art Gallery in Mason City, Iowa on Monday that is presenting “Painting & Mixed Media,” I can’t help but to be mystified by Rita Kirsch Dungey’s work. Rita’s work is a temporary NIACC art showcase that shows from February 16th through April 13th, 2016 along side of John Rodman’s “Photographs.”…

I am from the Indianapolis area, so the downtown city life isn’t new to me, but I had never heard of a museum that was open day in and day out. Also, being in a city late at night probably wasn’t the safest but, I went with it and trusted that it would be as fun as my sporadic friends said it would be. Looking from the outside, the building looked gloomy against the night and I got the impression that it was a…

The theme is important to not only the viewers but the artist that has items displayed. This is important because each artist thoughtfully creates a theme for their work and if it is not displayed in the right environment it could distort their product’s meaning. The style on each floor of the Denver Contemporary Art Museum was the same throughout due to each floor having the same artist. Unfortunately, during my visit, I did not find a theme set for the exhibitions. After consulting with the director of the Museum, I found out that each exhibition is changed every four weeks and only occasionally there is a theme portrayed throughout the exhibitions.…
