While we fall asleep each night more than we realize actually happens, in fact it is such a crucial part of our health we could not function day to day without it. Our bodies break our sleep up into five stages. The final stage is rapid eye movement (REM), and also the most important. According to the National Institute of Health, “During REM sleep, your brain and body are energized and dreaming occurs” (What is). REM sleep is triggered by signals sent to different areas of our brain, these signals are primarily sent to our cerebral cortex. The cerebral cortex is what makes us human more than anything and is responsible for our thoughts, how we perceive, and our understanding of language.
