The run-through was a complete disaster, for I had forgotten every section I had needed to memorize in order to play the solo fluently. For the next few days, I was in a practice room every chance I had, scrutinizing every note in every measure as a last-minute attempt to raise my hopes and my chance of getting a superior…
Music is the universal language, and my duty as a devoted violinist is to convey my message of passion through every bow stroke. Whenever I participate in an ensemble, whether it be the SCHS Chamber Orchestra or YOPW’s Youth Symphony Orchestra, I enter into a haven in which the excess worries of everyday life wither away, and all that stands is the music before me. With the chance to exhibit and further develop my leadership skills as section leader and assistant concert mistress, I set the example for my fellow musicians by expressing true musicianship to fulfill my duty to the ensemble and execute a successful performance. Life is an orchestrated ensemble composed of varying styles and ever-changing tempos, and I believe that my ability…
Measure 1 My lips brush against my mouth piece already attached onto the trumpet. The instrument is kind of warm since the warm up was cut short. My palms are sweaty, my lips tremble; I look at the audience, this is not Chicago, and I have no family here. I search through the audience only to see the 5 judges in the back and my band director in the front.…
My sophomore year of high school, I was accepted into the Saber’s Marching Pride Flag corps. At my high school, all freshmen are required to play their instruments because the music is the most important part of the show. Also, it requires the kids to focus on marching basics, drill reading, and learning how to roll step, different from the flag corps where they jazz walk. I have performed with flag corps for the last three years which were named: Groovy Baby, Muevas Sus Huesos, Seven years. Prior to this, I was not very athletic and had no dance background.…
My ears ring as the old school bus screeches to a halt. We hop off, and a dry, winter gust smacks my face. Instantly, the frigid wind sends my nose running. Walking towards the back door of the school, I grasp the cold metal handle, open it, and slam a piece of wood underneath to keep it ajar. After we become accustom to the cold shock, Mrs. Cimenski, our director, orders us to haul the heavy wooden tables and a set of four lockers toward our designated backstage area.…
Being an Eritrean American has always been something Ia??m proud of. In an effort to better connect myself with my heritage, I began to take Eritrean cultural dance lessons in order to be part of the Eritrean festival dance performance. I have always wanted to excell in everything that I do, especially if it meant a lot to me. I did not expect that these dance lessons would provide me with the lesson of handling failure and criticism.…
While reading the article, “Relax, It’s Only A Test,” I found the point that students often get so anxious about the test or exam that it actually interferes with their working memory, and intern making them struggle on the test very interesting. Although I don’t consider myself an anxious test taker I do relate with the part of the article describing the wrong study method. I do often study by reviewing my notes and textbooks, which helps me become familiar on the topic, but that is not practicing for the testing situation. I love the theatre so when it gave the example of reviewing lines before opening night I was able to connect and realize I may not be using the best study methods for myself.…
What is sheet music? Is it a magical piece of writing that only musicians can read and that allow them to play their instruments like experts? No, sheet music is just a form of musical notation, be it written by hand or printed. Normally sheet music is like its other printed kin in that it is usually found printed on paper. Before paper was a readily available medium parchment was the medium of choice.…
Once a piece of music has been mastered by substantial practice, it can be performed for others. Unfortunately, many people find that performing a piece for only yourself and performing a piece for a crowd is massively different. Though there are a few who can skip this step, most must ease into it. The aspiring pianist should start performing for a few people before playing in a concert. He should start playing for more and more people at a rate that is entirely dependent upon the…
During my ongoing business conference to Colorado to learn about future career opportunities for my dual degrees in Communication design and Computer Science, I got to attend an orchestra concert presented by the Hapless Heroes who were conducted by Leslie Stewart. The show was musical theatre where they had a live orchestra playing in front of the stage while the actors explained the Greek tale of Orpheus and Eurydice. I attended this amazing show on the 4th of December. I love learning about Greek Mythology so I was already enthusiastic about attending this show.…
Now, the Classical era did not only change how the violin looked, but it also changed how the violin was used and held. The Classical era brought a new way of holding the instrument, “[the] early Classical period assured holding the violin on the shoulder, though a few village violinists might still have played violins on the breast.” The shoulder playing technique is how modern violinists play the instrument today, but none of this would be possible if were not for the Classical period and its improvements to the instrument. One violinist made the violin into what it is known as today, “The modern bow had been invented by Francois Tourte. Its weight, length, and balance allowed the player to produce power and brilliance in the higher ranges.”…

Violins are one of the most popular instruments ever. They are an hourglass-shaped string instrument that reaches the highest pitches in a string orchestra. The violin's history goes a long way back through many different types of medieval instruments such as the viol. The viol was a great instrument, but when Andrea Amati greatly improved its design and called it the violin, many forgot about it.…
In order to teach well, I needed to understand my subject matter and had to collect the required materials that would…
My First Dance Competition The first time I performed at a dance competition was a very exciting and memorable moment for me. I was six years old and insanely nervous. Typically the nerves hit me while I wait in the wing of the stage for my name to be called, but this time it began the moment I woke up in the morning. I remember having to wake up at about six in the morning in order to have time to get ready and be at the convention center in Wichita when the doors opened at 7:30 a.m.…
