R. J. Palacio's Wonder

“Those without a disability are often times more disabled than those with a disability,” is a quote by an anonymous author. This relates to the stories “Wonder”, by R.J. Palacio and “The Girl Who Was Born With Only 2 Arms and 2 Legs”, by Stuart Baum. In the story “Wonder”, Auggie (the main character) has a facial disability and has had 27 surgeries since he was born. He soon decides to go to school when he gets older and has a rough time in school when a mean bully, Julian, makes fun of him and his teachers treat Auggie differently. Other problems along the way with his family and friend make his life a little rockier, but he finds a way to survive it. On the other hand, in “The Girl With Only 2 Arms and 2 Legs,” Quarta faces the disaster of having only two arms and two legs, while everyone else in her world has four arms and four legs. She has the struggle with her classmates teasing her and her teachers acting …show more content…
"Do you like him?" In Star Wars, Darth Sidious's face gets burned by Sith lightning and becomes totally deformed. His skin gets all shriveled up and his whole face just kind of melts, making him relate to Auggie’s face. This implies that Julian was trying to be popular and make fun of Auggie and that Julian is a bully towards Auggie. Additionally, on Halloween, Auggie dressed up differently than he was supposed to and found out that Julian and his little crew, along with Jack Will (his best friend at the school), were talking and saying mean things behind his back, making Auggie not be friends with Jack Will for a while. Being a bully can happen in many ways, and it can really hurt even when you talk behind that person's back like Jack Will and Julian. Lastly, Auggie heard Julian say once, “If I was Auggie, I would kill myself,” implying that Auggie looked badly on purpose, making Julian an even worse bully. In summary, Auggie and Quarta both struggle with their classmates bullying them and being

Is homeschool a better option for students like Auggie? The novel Wonder by R.J Palacio is about a boy named August who has craniofacial disorder. The novel explains his journey through public schools. In my opinion I think that homeschooling is not a better option for students like Auggie because they are not handicapped, they need to be more sociable, and they won't learn to grow up. One reason why homeschooling is not better for students like Auggie is because students like Auggie don't have any disabilities or complications whatsoever.…

When I had to read Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton, it gave me a lot to think about the treatment of those who are disabled. Wharton writes about the treatment of Ethan by the townspeople. The narrator says, “There was something bleak and unapproachable in his face , and he was so stiffened and grizzled that I took him for an old man and was surprised to hear that he was not more than fifty two” (Wharton 3). Just the description from the narrator’s point of view gives me a sense that the public eye shies away from those who are different. Many people leave Ethan Frome alone because of the damage from the accident and the physical ailments he has received.…

Overall the society is the one in control who can actually make a difference in reducing and eventually removing the barriers between a disabled person versus a “normal” individual. In the memoir, the example of the social model was when Martha brings Adam to Harvard for her to finish up her year. No one acknowledged Adam being born. They wouldn’t make eye contact with him, and those who would speak with Martha did not try to make obvious that Adam looked not “normal”. Towards the end of the book, Martha states, “That was only the beginning.…

Who You Truly Are “I can’t do it, I will never be able to!” “It is so much easier for everyone else!” At one point, everyone has felt this way, whether it was because the task ahead of them was too difficult, or just simply too complicated to understand. Although most people are able to get past that point, there are others in society who can’t give up, who deal with the handicaps head-on every day. A great example of overcoming handicaps is in the novel Fried Green Tomatoes; the author Fannie Flagg gives both physical and mental handicaps and shows that it is possible to overcome and grow from them.…
