R J Palacio Reflection

Dear R.J. Palacio,

Your book Wonder was more than just a book to me. I was born three months early with low blood platelets and multiple deforms on my body. All these things never became a problem until my first year of middle school and I started to get sick more often and the spots on my skin became more prominent. I got bullied for the things i could not control. I felt as if i was trapped and would never be able to escape, until someone recommended I read Wonder.

Your book became an outlet for me. Reading about the struggles August was going through in the book made me feel as if someone was going through this with me. I tried to handle things the way August did and try not to fight back. At some points though I couldn’t help but hate the way I look. In the beginning of the book, August says, “If I found a magic lamp and could have one wish, I would wish that I had a normal face that no one ever noticed at all”(Palacia 3). Reading this made me feel as if August was right there with me relating with me, not trying to act like he knew what I was going

How did you come up with the ways people would make fun of August, because even if you think it’s wrong for people to judge him for the way it looks to make the book realistic you had to include it in the novel even if it felt wrong. When you were coming up with ideas were you using real life events that you have seen or accidentally done yourself. Because we all know even how much we try you are going to end up slightly staring or pointing at someone who looks different. For example, i personally know what it feels like for people to stare and point and not even notice my face or new hair cut because they are too busy staring at my skin marks, but sometimes i still accidentally end up staring at someone who looks different

Palacio attempted to remove her son from the situation so as not to upset her or the girl's family but ended up only intensifying the situation. Natalie Merchant's song "Wonder" had her realize that the incident could teach a valuable lesson. Palacio was inspired by Merchant's lyrics and she began writing.[4]…

I find that this book, especially the last chapter, taught me not to take things at face value. I believe that I will be more cautious as to form an opinion based on just what the outer appearance is. In addition, it taught me that life is a copulation of events that continue to form and shape us to deal with challenges in the future. Each of these seamless events creates a stronger ability to deal with both the good and the bad adventures we…

The author wants us to believe that though some journeys are dangerous, involving sacrifice, even if they’re not what you had hoped, it’s not about what happens at the end, it’s about the very journey itself. Ruby Daly is the main character of this book, along with Liam “Lee”, Charles or “Chubs” and Suzume or “Zu.” In the beginning of this book, Ruby was trapped inside of a camp for 6 years of her life, being treated like she was less than human until she finally had the chance to escape, a worker of the camp revealing their true identity, helping Ruby escape. Even throughout the beginning the book, it was evident that the journey that the main character was about to face was one where she would find her true self, where she belonged,…
