Under the equitable Islamic laws, women have a clear right to own, buy or sell property and businesses. It states in the Quran, in several of its chapters (Quran2, Quran 4, and Quran 5), that a woman can inherit money or items regardless of whether she is married or not. They are in no way forbidden to inherit less than a male in her family. Furthermore, the Quran claims that women are permitted to demand their dowry (money or a gift given to the husband by the bride on their wedding) from her husband. Even in the case of a divorce, a Muslim woman can take her fair share of property and items. These rules are plainly stated in the Quran, but are not enforced in Islamic governments. According to political leaders, women are controlled when it comes to owning property, limiting their rights to accessing their husbands’ money and sometimes their own if they did not have to give it to their spouse. In fact, all transactions of money and dealings of assets have to be made through the husband, which therefore confines the amount of freedom Muslim women have. The problem grows bigger when the Sharia laws demanded that not even a widowed woman is permitted to manage an inheritance. The oppression of Islamic women due to the alteration of ancient Sharia laws has stripped their marital liberties, freedom to dress the way they want, and their financial and ownership rights. The Quran and its laws are constantly being tweaked and it is greatly affecting the women of the Islamic society. The way they are living significantly differs from what the Quran and Sharia teach, and because people are very dedicated to what the rules instruct, they follow whatever is set in stone by the governments, as even the prophet Muhammad fought for gender equality.
