Syria has been ruled by Alawites, a religious group in Syria, including their president, Bashar al-Assad, who dislike Shia Muslims (Ward). This makes it harder for the Shia community in Syria. Especially when they are both fighting for power, causing their lands to become oppressed. Not only that, but in Iraq it was once ruled by a Sunni minority over the Shiite majority, it wasn’t until the US came in and overthrew the Sunni government, and Shiite government rightfully took over (Ward). However, it explains why certain groups of Muslims, including ISIS, Sunni Muslims, despise America for the all pain and loss they caused them. For example, Osama bin Laden was also a Sunni Muslim. After September 11, 2001, a horrific terrorist attack, Osama said, "What America is tasting now is only a copy of what we have tasted. ... Our Islamic nation has been tasting the same for more [than] eighty years, of humiliation and disgrace, its sons killed and their blood spilled, its sanctities desecrated."
