Age isn’t just about a number; it’s about how we act, how we react, and we interact. We don’t choose to age, it’s a natural process. We may choose to grow old, by living to other people’s expectations or by not living at all. So why do the elderly get punished for natural causes? As Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “Beautiful young people are accidents of nature, but beautiful old people are works of art” (Aging Quotes: 9 Quotes That Will Make You Feel Good About Aging, 2013). So who are we to determine when someone can stop living? Aged is defined as “progressive changes during the adult years, but these changes are not necessarily negative nor do they reduce an individual’s viability” (Hillier & Barrow, 2011, pp. 3-4). Health may go downhill, looks may go downhill; but that doesn’t mean performance or mind go downhill. The Age Discrimination in Employment Act helps protect older people; who, sadly, haven’t found the antidote to aging. In this economy, not everyone can afford to retire. Some need to work until they have literally reached their death beds. It’s not their choice, I know several elderly who would rather take a vacation to see grandkids or go on mission trips. Age wasn’t brought up. Even though she went to back to work for the same law firm before she retired, he didn’t turn her down. Her experience was far better than the twenty something year old that he would have had to train, familiarize. He wouldn’t have to start at square one with Cheryl, and he didn’t let her age get in the way. I think people look at the gray hair and the wrinkled eyes and immediately say that person is incompetent. When the truth is, they are probably more competent than someone fresh out of college.
