The desire to change is fundamental in order to succeed in life. In the novel Touching Spirit Bear, by Ben Mikaelson, there is a young boy named Cole Matthews, who is filled with anger because of the negative events he experienced through his life. Due to a brutal attack towards Peter Driscal, the Circle of Justice put Cole through the process of isolation on an island. Cole struggled to be submissive in the beginning, but in the end, he was a changed boy. “Family and peer group mezzo systems are dynamically involved in children’s growth, development, and behavior” (Zastrow, 2013, p. 166). The influences on both Wes Moore’s from their family and peers greatly contributed to their decision-making, critical thinking and outlook of life, which played a part in their outcomes. In the beginning of The Other Wes Moore, Wes (2) told Wes (1) when speaking about their fathers that “You father wasn’t there because he couldn’t be, my father wasn’t there because he chose not to be. We’re going to mourn in their absence in different ways” (p. 3). There was only one parent that could communicate with Cole and that was his mother, Mrs. Holland. Mr. Holland becomes easily frustrated with Cole because all he wants is for him to have the same passion for music as he does. However, I believe that this is why Mr. Holland feels the need to engage more with his students than Cole because he feels that his students can actually understand how much he appreciates music. In my opinion, this is where all Mr. Holland’s time is consumed rather than where it should be. I can see why Mr. Holland isolates himself from his family, but Cole is his son, and that is where his main priority should be.…
