I believe that the Curtis family were not official greasers or socs before their parents died. Although I also believe that they did live in the area of which greasers live and they had relations with them. There are many reasons that lead me to this theory. Due to the book saying, “He never let on to Mom and Dad how he felt, though, because we never had enough money and usually we had a hard time making ends meet”(Hinton dig. 35). This leads me to think that they were in poverty in some level even with their parents. There is no way that they could have been socs if they, “...never had enough money and… had a hard time making ends meet”(Hinton dig, 35). They also couldn’t have been socs because ocs find themselves asking, “Did you ever hear of having more than you wanted? So that you couldn't want anything else and then started looking for something else to want? It seems like we're always searching for something to satisfy us, and never finding it”(Hinton dig. 33). …show more content…
I do not think when they say how good their parents were they mean that they were the best parents ever who give them everything they wanted but parents who were the best ever because they had the boys’ best interests at heart, interpersonal relationships, and tried their best to raise them well. I think they wanted to and needed to join the gang because once their parents died they lost an outlet, “My mother was golden and beautiful…”(Hinton dig. 43). When Ponyboy writes this he means his mom was like him, he understands Johnny’s description of “Golden” and he thinks his mom was golden like him. This leads me to believe the boys could have gone to their mom to talk because she was probably a good listener like Pony is. Once they lost he they needed new people to be their outlet like Two-bit, Steve, Dally, Tim, and especially
