Change is inevitable. This unavoidable uncertainty is something that every person must endure in their lifetime, and more often than not it does not go as planned. Through an examination of The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, it is evident that both Reverend Hale and Reverend Parris undergo a drastic change in the course of the novel. Hale and Parris experience this striking transformation as they go from having their actions dictated by their role and power in Salem, to being controlled by doubt and fear, and then concluding with the realization that their Puritan Belief System is not only destructive but has been manipulated by a group of attention-seeking girls.…

For this assignment I have chosen to do Reverend Hale. In the beginning of the play he was a “proud young man” who thought that this was nothing more than an errand (Miller 1146). As the story progresses so does his character. He began this story with the thought that he was going for a small trip and would be quickly returning home but he soon learns that what was to be a “Simple errand” would soon become a unjust killing spree of the court. He realizes that he had walked into something much larger than his main purpose and ends up losing his way until he decides to change what he can in the time he is allotted before more innocent people die unjustly.…

Elizabeth cannot condemn Proctor’s behavior, for he is behaving religiously, and she refuses to force him to lie and give in to Hale and Parris’ urging to go against God’s will. Elizabeth Proctor acts as a Christ figure within the text, characterized by her compassion, selflessness, and piety. A character that is “sacrificing [them]self in some way for others”(Foster) characterizes a Christ figure, and Elizabeth embodies the role perfectly. She remains true to her religious ideals, following the Ten Commandments religiously and caring about Proctor’s well-being more than her…

During the first trial where John Proctor is defending his wife, he states “There are them that cannot sing, and them that cannot weep—my wife cannot lie” (Miller 1259). Earlier in the play he admitted to his wife “God help me, I lusted, and there is a promise in such sweat” (Miller 1259). John had committed adultery when Abigail was the Proctors’ servant, which explains why Abigail is out for Elizabeth’s blood. Due to the fact that John admitted his appalling crime to Elizabeth, he thought by admitting it to the court, and her confirming it, it would prove that she cannot lie and is innocent. He does such this; He confesses to Danforth and the deputy calls in Elizabeth to ask “Look at me!…
