“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” This quote came from Jesus, and it is written in John 13:34-35. In Leviticus 19:9-18, Leviticus says: You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason frankly with your neighbour, lest you incur sin because of him. You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbour as yourself: I am the Lord.” The two quotes sound similar, right? 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.” In this passage, Jesus is saying if someone slaps you, let them slap your other cheek. Why? Well, He wants you to humble yourself. Have you ever been slapped in public? It is very embarrassing. It leaves a red handprint on your cheek, and when the slap comes, it makes a loud sound, which makes everybody stare at you. Jesus wants you to make yourself humble by embarrassing yourself even more. He says if somebody wants your shirt, you should give them your coat too. This is a metaphor- what He actually means is that if somebody wants to sew you or take your money, let them take all of it. He also says that if anyone makes you go one mile, to go two. This, like the quote before, is a metaphor too. In the time of Jesus, Roman soldiers could force any slave to carry their stuff for a mile.
