“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” This quote came from Jesus, and it is written in John 13:34-35. In Leviticus 19:9-18, Leviticus says: You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason frankly with your neighbour, lest you incur sin because of him. You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbour as yourself: I am the Lord.” The two quotes sound similar, right? Well, actually, they are not giving the same message. If you read Matthew 5:38-42, you will see the difference. This is the quote: 38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’[a]39 But I tell you, do not resist …show more content…
41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.” In this passage, Jesus is saying if someone slaps you, let them slap your other cheek. Why? Well, He wants you to humble yourself. Have you ever been slapped in public? It is very embarrassing. It leaves a red handprint on your cheek, and when the slap comes, it makes a loud sound, which makes everybody stare at you. Jesus wants you to make yourself humble by embarrassing yourself even more. He says if somebody wants your shirt, you should give them your coat too. This is a metaphor- what He actually means is that if somebody wants to sew you or take your money, let them take all of it. He also says that if anyone makes you go one mile, to go two. This, like the quote before, is a metaphor too. In the time of Jesus, Roman soldiers could force any slave to carry their stuff for a mile. Jesus is saying that if you are a slave and a soldier tells you to carry his stuff for a mile, to carry it an extra mile because this way, you wouldn’t be carrying his burden because you are a slave- you would be carrying out of the kindness of your

The writer is encouraging us to tightly secure our confession of hope, to refuse to stop believing (http://www.macmillandictionary.com); he was charging us so that we cannot be tempted to return back to our old living style because we are now in the “new and living way” (v.20). "To understand a proverb and a figure"1 is part of the vision of life in the book of Proverbs. The pearls of wisdom within are quite similar to many found in the Odyssey. The emphasis on virtue is the same in both books; Odysseus and Telemachus illustrate the striving after virtue. However, as the Greeks view their gods differently than the Jews do God, these books diverge in some ways. The approach to life differs, but the search for happiness is the same.…

“I will seize fate by the throat; it shall certainly never wholly overcome me” (Ludwig van Beethoven). Elton John’s song “I Know the Truth” accurately describes Oedipus’ situation throughout the story.…

The theme of love lies at the heart of the Fourth Gospel, pervading every aspect of the book. The Synoptic Gospels focus on the theme as well, but in John’s Gospel Jesus directs his disciples to love God and their neighbor, based on Deuteronomy 6:4–5 and Leviticus 19:18. In John’s Gospel, Jesus’s only command for his disciples is to love one another (15:12), and he assures the reader that God loves those who keep his commandments (14:21, 23). John points to Jesus’s death as an example of the type of love that Jesus expects his disciples to have (cf. 3:16; 15:13). Love in the Gospel of John argues that to understand John’s concept of love requires understanding more than what Jesus taught in the Gospel.…

As one of the first ever recorded works of Western literature, the Odyssey was influential in establishing a foundation on which literature would be based for thousands of years. Long regarded as a brilliant storyteller, Homer composed the Odyssey in, what many think, the late eighth-century BC, although there has also been speculation of it taking place in the seventh-century BC due to clues provided in Homer’s other work, the Iliad (Introduction, xxxv). The Odyssey is constructed in the style of poetry, and it is debated as to whether it was composed orally or by hand. Although the printing press was years from its creation, the Mycenaean civilization of ancient Greece used a Linear B form of writing that could have been used despite the…
