In the novel Incarceron, the main character and protagonist, Claudia Arlexa, is faced with obstacles she must overcome throughout the rising action of the plot. Whilst battling against a forced royal marriage arranged by the antagonists by attempting to free Finn and his friends from an unescapable prison, she undoubtedly faces some hardships. For example, she has to figure out how to stay in contact with the captives while being watched by enemies. One of the antagonists, the Queen, “let her know” that “...many of the mirrors are double sided and the listening devices all over the Palace are most efficient” (Fisher 264). When she refuses and they continue to prod her, she counter attacks by blackmailing the rebels. To illustrate, she snaps back “Promise me now. Swear. Or I go to the Queen this minute and tell her everything” (Fisher 302) Lastly, there’s the small factor that the jail she needs to break the captives out of, Incarceron, is literally alive and almost impossible break out of. Instead, she steals the key to the prison from the Warden, but not without difficulty. For example, the author writes “...she picked up the key. The room crashed.Alarms howled; rays of laserfire shot up from the floor, ringing her in a cage of red light” (Fisher 78). She escapes using another illegal device from Jared. Later, she uses the key to teleport Finn from Incarceron. As she communicates more and more with Finn, researches Incarceron and Prince Giles’ supposed death, and does some espionage, she ultimately makes the decision that Finn must be Prince Giles, rightful ruler of the kingdom, and the person she’s supposed to marry, not Finn’s
