In A Streetcar Named Desire Blanche visits her sister, Stella, and her husband, Stanley, out in New Orleans to escape from her life in Mississippi. During her stay we find that Stella and Stanley do not have a very healthy relationship. We also find that Blanche is not well and she had not made the best of choices in her past. We already know that Blanche is vain and obsessed with appearance. We also see in the beginning of the play that Blanche has arrived at her sister’s house by surprise, and is obviously upset about something. What we do not know for a while is why Blanche is truly so upset, and the extent to which she has gotten herself in trouble. We do not know this because Blanche wants to keep it secret and she lies about many things in order to create for herself a better reality. For example, Blanche’s relationship with Mitch is based on lies. She tells him on page 38 when they first meet that she is younger than her sister, and also that she is visiting because her sister has not been well.
