Ha and all the other refugees are trying to get out of their homes and country so they don't’ have to deal with the war. Ha and her family are trying to escape her country because of war therefore they need to decide what to pack as shown in the following quote,“Into each pack one pair of pants, one pair of shorts, three pairs of underwear… three clumps of cooked rice, one choice.” (Lai 55). This quote is showing, that Ha is packing up to leave and that they cannot bring that much because they don’t want stuff that will hold them back. This family has spent 20 years in a refugee camp and now they feel like it is not a safe environment for them so they are deciding to go to America, such as.“As one helicopter landed and the people scrambling off, dozens of sailors ran over to push the aircraft over the side into the ocean.(Brice)’’ It is showing that all these people are trying to get off of the helicopter on to the boat because other helicopters are trying to land before getting shot out of the air so all the people have to run off the helicopter to get on the boat so the sailors can pust the helicopter in the ocean so the next helicopter can land.
